The first Steps2Health walk of May was a glorious start to a month that shows Pembrokeshire at its finest and marked the Tenby walking club’s 20th anniversary.

On May 3, 29 cheery walkers gathered near the site of Stackpole Court. Chris and Annie led the Steadies on a delightful circuit, taking in the walled garden, new willow sculptures and Ice House before heading for Mencap Gardens and Cawdor Cafe. It was a delightful day to enjoy the abundance of spring flowers. Brian, backed by Kym, led the Speedies down to the Eight Arch Bridge then picked up the same route trodden by the Steadies. The café staff did a brilliant job of catering for the queue that ensued and everyone enjoyed their lunch sitting in the sunshine.

The following Saturday, a glorious day for anniversary celebrations, 28 enthusiastic walkers started with a short, but delightful walk, across Glen Beach in Saundersfoot, Finishing at Regency Hall, they were joined by another 20 club members in time for lunch. The ladies of the hall committee had laid on a magnificent buffet. The proceedings culminated with a toast proposed by founder member Paul: “Here’s to the next 20 years”.

The glorious weather continued for the annual club trip to Caldey Island on May 17. It was a delightful trip across Caldey Sound for the 29 club members. Some even saw seals. Brian, backed by Jane, led the Speedies on an anticlockwise circuit of the island, made even more spectacular by the wonderful visibility. Marlene, supported by Donna, led the Steadies on the shorter and easier route via the Old Priory and Lighthouse. Everyone finished up at the cafe with it’s welcome shade trees. Eventually people started wandering back to the quay for an equally delightful trip back to the mainland.

The 24th was a more typical day for a Spring Bank Holiday weekend: grey and cool. 33 walkers turned up at Battery Gardens, Tenby and walked briskly to keep warm. Barbara, backed by Brian, led the Speedies on a longish walk taking in the historic and atmospheric Nabbs causeway through the marshes. Chris, supported by Annie and Jane, led the Steadies on a shorter and easier walk via Black Rock and Kiln Park. Once back in town, all headed for a fundraising coffee morning being held at St John’s church.

Despite the driving drizzle on May 31, 29 cheery, suitably clad walkers turned up at Battery Gardens. Kym, supported by Barbara, led the Speedies on the “up and up” walk to the top field below Brynhir. The usual glorious vista was hiding in the murk, so they soon headed back down into town. Chris, backed by Marlene, led the larger Steadies group through the town towards the Croft. They couldn’t see anything either, when they got there, so they circled back into town via Butt’s Field and the Green. Walkers dispersed and headed for their favourite cafés.
