To celebrate St. David's Day on March 1, Menter Iaith Sir Benfro (Pembrokeshire Welsh Language Initiative) held a Welsh cawl a chân evening at the Town Hall in Pembroke to help raise awareness of the Welsh language and culture and to prove that concerts and events can be held through the medium of Welsh.

To open the evening, the children from the Welsh unit of Golden Grove School in Pembroke beautifully sang three Welsh songs under the leadership of Mrs. Rhian Beynon, followed by a few songs by Crymych Rugby Club Male Voice Choir, under the baton of Mrs. Glesni Vaughan, with Mrs. Jill Lewis as accompanist.

It was great to see parents in the audience looking so proud of their children being able to do something that they never had the opportunity to do, which is to learn to speak Welsh at an early age and singing with pride and passion.

Pembroke Ladies Guild of the RNLI, under the guidance of Mrs. Joan Giles, then served the most delicious cawl you could ever wish to taste, followed by a cup of tea and Welsh cakes.

Two local Welsh learners then gave some entertainment. Mr. Jock Hulcup sang two Welsh folk songs, and Mr. Hywel McDiarmid, dressed in his traditional Scottish Piper kilt, played a few Welsh songs followed by a few Scottish songs on his bagpipes.

Crymych Rugby Club Male Voice Choir brought the evening to a close with another strong repertoire of songs, followed by everyone joining in to sing the national anthem, Hen Wlad fy Nhadau.

The Pembroke, Pembroke Dock and area appeal fund for the 2013 Pembrokeshire Urdd Eisteddfod will benefit to the tune of over £350 from the proceeds of this evening, as will the RNLI.
