Former Royal Signalman Ivor Davey was a special guest on board the Royal Navy warship HMS Mersey at Port of Pembroke recently, when he was presented with a campaign medal awarded for service during the Malayan Campaign in the 1950s.

Ivor received the Pingat Jasa Malaysia medal, awarded by the Government of Malaysia to those who were involved in peace-keeping groups for distinguished chivalry, gallantry, sacrifice or loyalty.

The presentation was made by the Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed, the Hon. Robin Lewis, and Commodore Jamie Miller, the Royal Navy's regional officer.

Originally from Swansea, Ivor, of Pembroke Dock, became Royal Signalman No. 23363304. Soon after qualifying as a technician cable jointer he found himself on a troop ship bound for Singapore and Malaya.

At the time a campaign was being fought against communist infiltrators. Many cables were sabotaged and Ivor's duties included repairing, re-routing and testing the cables.

Returning to the UK, Ivor completed his army service in January 1959 and re-joined the GPO. He married Mair and the couple later moved to Pembroke Dock.

His hobby of deep-sea diving led to many enjoyable hours off the Welsh coastline, and his interest in wreck diving developed into a small business - Hart and Davey Boat Hire.

An accident when he fell from a barge curtailed diving activities but Ivor continues to be fully involved with his community.
