Police had to use leg restraints on a man in Milford who tried to kick out at officers when being arrested a court heard this week.
Twenty-seven-year-old Ry Robert Willams, of Peregrine Close, Haverfordwest, pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting police officers in the execution of their duty when he appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Prosecutor Sian Vaughan told the court that on July 26, officers went to Milford Haven to arrest Mr. Williams for an unrelated matter.
“The defendant was particularly difficult and was struggling when officers were attempting to arrest him. Mr. Williams became more aggressive and began to kick out, so leg restraints were used to get him into the back of the police vehicle,” she explained.
Defence solicitor Jonathan Webb told the court that somebody had phoned the police in relation to believing that there might have been an issue between Mr. Williams and his partner, but there had been no issue at all.
“Police were arresting him for something he hadn’t done. Mr. Williams accepts that he could have handled the matter differently, and not shown aggression during the incident.
“It was a short and unpleasant incident, but not anything that officers wouldn’t have had to deal with previously in their line of work,” said Mr. Webb, adding that the defendant apologised to officers when interviewed.
Magistrates fined Mr. Williams £80 for the offence and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £30 victim surcharge.
