A Narberth man has been handed a 20 month motoring ban after admitted a drink-drive charge in court.

Forty-seven-year-old Gareth Scale, of Redstone Court, appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday, to plead guilty to a charge of driving his BMW on Redstone Road, with a level of 70 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - twice the legal limit.

Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard -Jones told magistrates that police officers carrying out observations on vehicles in the area on July 1, stopped Mr. Scale in his car shortly after 1 am, near to the entrance of doctor’s surgery in Narberth.

“It was a routine stop, and there was no allegations of bad driving - but the defendant was twice the legal limit when he provided a sample,” he explained.

Defence solicitor Mike Kelleher said that his client had made a foolish decision to drive, after being out and leaving early.

“He clearly didn’t appreciate the amount of alcohol in his system. In 29 years of driving, he has no penalty points up until now. Mr. Scale has sold the car now, his wife doesn’t drive either, so it will cause the family some difficulty, but they do live in Narberth, where there is a modicum of of public transport,” added Mr. Kelleher.

Magistrates disqualified the defendant from driving for 20 months and a fined him £120.

Mr. Scale was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a surcharge of £30.
