A St. Florence man who became abusive and aggressive towards police officers after being asked to leave a village pub has been charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

Thirty-eight-year-old Thomas Chandley appeared at Haverfordwest Magistrates Court on Tuesday, to plead guilty to being drunk and disorderly at the Sun Inn, on June 17.

Prosecutor Vaughan Pritchard-Jones told the court that the defendant became ‘very aggressive’ and used ‘foul language’ towards police officers who arrived to deal with the matter.

“I don’t know what got into this young man, whether he was drunk, but he was causing a nuisance, bothering people, and the licensee wanted him to leave the premises due to his loud and aggressive behaviour.

“Police officers arrived and offered to take him home, but he was very abusive towards them, using foul language. Mr. Chandley resisted arrest and officers had to PAVA spray him just to get the handcuffs on.

“This was an unpleasant incident and there were people in the pub at the time. Police officers were trying to do their best to help him, but he was having none of it,” continued Mr. Pritchard-Jones, explaining that Mr. Chandley had previous convictions to his name from back in 2004.

Addressing magistrates himself, Mr. Chandley admitted that he had been drunk and disorderly on the night in question, and apologised for his behaviour.

“I started drinking early and I’d had a few shots. Outside the pub problems occurred when a couple of lads started on me, which riled me,” he claimed.

“I’m sorry for anything I said to anyone, especially the police,” added Mr. Chandley.

Magistrates fined the defendant £400 for the offence and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £85 and a £40 victim surcharge,
