Tenby Tennis Club coach Alison Lewis, who is also captain of the Haverfordwest Ladies first team, has played her part in winning the South Wales Summer Doubles League.
Haverfordwest Ladies first team took part in the South Wales Summer Doubles League in Division 1 West. Included in the league were Swansea, Llandybie, Aberystwyth, Bridgend 2 and VA Glamorgan 2.
We had a strong squad, including Alison Lewis (captain), Laura Davies, Jane Allen, Sarah Keogh, Amy Waters, Sandra Rowlands, Diane Davies, Sandra Crowther and Sharon Irish. Each fixture consisted of three pairs competing in two matches each, playing each team home and away. Haverfordwest came top of the league with 100 points, winning all 10 fixtures.
The way the league is set up meant that despite their emphatic victory in Division 1 West they had to have a play-off against Division 1 East. The play-off was against Whitchurch last Sunday and, despite a rather nervy couple of games, Haverfordwest won all six matches and are now promoted to the Premier 2 Division for next summer.
“We had an amazing season,” said captain Alison Lewis. “We won all 10 fixtures and in eight of them we won all six rubbers! In fact, we won 58 matches and lost only two in the whole season. I’m absolutely delighted with the whole team; their commitment and support and encouragement has been phenomenal, as well as playing some fantastic tennis! It’s a fabulous result and a great relief to get the promotion after working so hard all season. Thanks to the whole squad and well done!”
