Club Sailing

Seven boats competed in the two club races last Saturday; five Ospreys, an RS600 and a Phantom. The wind from the south was brisk and rising, but the weather was dry and the sun made an appearance.

From the start line over by Monkstone, the course was upwind towards St. Catherine’s, left there and out to the gybe at the eastern, then back to the start.

Dan in the RS600 enjoyed the first race, blasting round the course to take a comfortable win from Jon in the Phantom in second, then Mike/Deanna in the first Osprey.

In the second race, Merlot induced exhaustion caused the inversion of the RS600; Jon in the Phantom, enjoying a proper workout, took full advantage and he took first, followed by Dan, then Mike/Deanna, again first Osprey.

Of the other four Ospreys, Jaime/Griff and Dyfan Steve each scored a fourth; Ted/John (making his Osprey crewing debut in a good force five!) were consistent in fifth, whilst Richard/Alastair brought up the rear.

On Tuesday, the last evening race of the summer season took place, again with seven boats competing, five Ospreys, a Scorpion and an RS200. The forecast very light wind in fact turned out to be a force three to four south-easterly with decent waves.

The fleet were slow to start, some slower than others!, but from the start line the triangular course was towards Caldey, then left out to sea, then gybing and back to the start.

Mike/Deanna started promptly and reached the windward mark first, pursued by the Scorpion and the rest of the fleet. Then it was spinnakers up for the two down wind reaches, planing fast and surfing on the waves. After four laps and in the gathering gloom, on corrected time the race was won by Peter/Igor in the Scorpion, followed by Mike/Deanna, then Dan/Scarlett in the RS200.

This concludes the summer series for the Scorpion who, despite missing the final week end of races on Saturday, are club champions for 2017 - well done Peter and Igor!

Last weekend Ioan and Oscar Thompson from TSC competed at The Zone Championship at Fishguard in a RS Feva. They secured second overall in the general handicap fleet; a result to be proud of, well done boys!

Junior training 

The wind abated in time for the more experienced to go on the water last Wednesday. However, the Stage 1 and 2 stayed ashore and were able to cover the items needed to gain their certificates.

At the time of writing, the forecast for the final on water session (Wednesday September 27) was again for strong winds which have curtailed progress this season. End of season party with presentation of certificates and trophies on Wednesday, October 18. 

Cruiser racing 

This has concluded for the year. 2017 champions are Steve Lewis and his crew in Aries.

Opening hours

The club is open lunch times on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and evenings on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 5.30 pm. Pop in to enjoy a drink in the best location in town!
