Six boats competed in last Saturday’s races, the Osprey of Jaime and Griff, Scorpion of Peter and Igor, Dan in the RS600, Jo in the Laser, John in the Comet and Carwyn and Martin trialing a RS200.
Alastair set a starboard course, starting just off St. Catherine’s, up to Waterwynch, then out to the east.
The first race began with a competitive start, with a building tide resulting in the majority of the boats sailing into the Harbour. Peter picked the shifts well and not only kept up with the RS600 for a lot of the race, but maintained a lead over the Osprey for all of it! He eventually went on to win, with Dan in second and Jaime in third.
In the second race, the wind increased a little, allowing Jaime and Griff to reach the windward mark first, only to be passed by the RS600 as the Scorpion as the race wore on. At the end of the second race, the results were the same as the first.
Tuesday evening’s race took place in warm sunshine and a mid-range south-westerly. Seven boats competed; four Ospreys, a Phantom, a Laser and a Comet. At the upwind start, Jaime/Griff in their Osprey were squeezed out at the starboard end; Jon in the Phantom infringed and put in a quick 720, but the rest of the fleet got away cleanly, led by Mike/Deanna back in their Osprey. By the windward mark, Ted/Lucas were leading and they hoisted spinnaker and shot off downwind to take the win on the water and on corrected time. Behind them, second was Jon in his Phantom, then Dyfan/Carwyn in their Osprey.
Junior training
The wind abated in time for the more experienced to go on the water last Wednesday. However, the Stage 1 and 2 stayed ashore and were able to cover the items needed to gain their certificates. At the time of writing, the forecast for the final on-water session next Wednesday, September 27, is again for strong winds, which have curtailed progress this season. End of season party with presentation of certificates and trophies on Wednesday, October 18.
Cruiser racing
The last race of the season took place last Saturday in a light NNW force 2 to 3. Three of the competing boats were tying for first place for the overall season’s trophy. There were five starters and a course was set around Monktsone to the Saundersfoot pontoons and back.
John Griffiths in Tejeda sneaked in at the start to take the lead, with Blake in Slipstream and Steve in Aries on their transom. It proved to be a beat all the way to the pontoons. Slipstream and Denny in Heather lost out by going inside after passing Monkstone. Tejeda, Aries and Phil in Accolade stayed out and gained by doing so.
Tejeda rounded the pontoons first, followed by Aries. Slipstream followed with Accolade, then Heather.
Spinnakers were used all the way back to Tenby. Tejeda crossed the line first, but Aries was close enough to win on handicap. Slipstream was third, Heather overtook Accolade due to Phil having some trouble with his cruising shute.
After 13 races sailed, the overall winner of the season was Steve in Aries. Well done to him and his crew. Tony and Billy in Apatshe second, Slipstream third.
Overall winner of the weekend races was Blake in Slipstream, Aries second and Apatshe third.
Denny in Heather wins the midweek trophy, with Aries second and Accolade third.
