Club Sailing
Excess wind and rain on Saturday caused the cancellation of the planned club races.
Tuesday evening the damp and misty conditions cleared, permitting the evening club race to be held, run by Steve Stubbs and Ioan.
Three Ospreys, a Phantom, a Laser and a 420 contested the race in a light force one/two south-westerly breeze. Everyone was away promptly at the down wind start, spinnakers up on the Ospreys. The boats were all close at the first gybe, but by the leeward mark, Ted/Lucas in their Osprey had established a small lead, which they built on over the three laps to take the win.
Second, in his Phantom, was Jon, fresh back from the Phantom Nationals, where he achieved a very creditable fifth position (well done Jon), followed by Dyfan/Steve after a ding dong battle with Mike/Deanna, both teams in Ospreys.
Cruiser Racing
It was a dead run to Monkstone Point and Blake in Slipstream and Steve in Aries had their spinnakers flying as they crossed the starting line. Slipstream rounded Monkstone first, closely followed by Aries and Crispin in Beagle. Then a gap to Denny in Heather and Phil in Accolade.
There was a close reach to the Pontoons and another back to Monkstone, and Heather started to look as if she was making her handicap. A beat back to Tenby resulted in boats looking for the best tide and wind, some staying out and others in.
Staying inshore proved to be the best choice and benefited Slipstream and Heather. Allowing for handicaps Heather was first by 20 seconds from Slipstream and Aries third by another 60 seconds in a closely fought race. Accolade was fourth and Beagle fifth.
Results to date mean Denny Young in Heather has won the Midweek Trophy and the overall series. The last race this Sunday at 12.30 will determine the Weekend series winner.
Junior training
It was another busy evening with four groups on the water, from absolute beginners to ‘experts’. Conditions were again excellent and with the tide in, it was a very enjoyable evening, with the usual BBQ to finish. Training will continue throughout September with an end of season party on Wednesday, October 5.
It is planned to meet every two weeks during the winter. Details later.
Acorn Regatta
This regatta for juniors was held at Llangorse lake last weekend, with a large entry from all over Wales. We were represented by the Thompson brothers, with Ioan sailing a Feva and Oscar a Tera, and both achieved podium places. The photo shows them with their awards. Congratulations to them and it is hoped that other local youngsters will join them in future.
