A number of events to catch up on from the last couple of weeks, with some excellent results from lots of members.
Manchester Marathon
Last Sunday saw a number of members heading up to Manchester, to tackle the Asics Manchester Marathon, with it billed as one, if not the flatest course in the country.
It proved to be a day of thrilling sporting achievement, first class entertainment and incredible crowd support. The event was granted a lovely spring day, with beautiful sunshine and warm temperature, not always the best for running in, but better than rain and wind.
Thousands took part in this the 41st running of the event, with it starting at 9 am, and this year saw the superfast course, providing great crowd support and a glorious finish at Emirates Old Trafford, the home of Lancashire Cricket Club.
This year 86 per cent of the top 50 recorded a PB or SB and 50 per cent of the top 250 got a PB.
The Aces had Jo Brace, Anto. O’Hara, Philippa Dodd and Steven Amos all taking part, with some very close times throughout the group.
Phillippa came home in 3:43:32, Anto in 3:47:32, Steven in 3:48:31 and Jo in 4:24:50, an excellent set of results and well done to all, especially Phillippa and Anto, who have both qualified for next year’s London Marathon - another Aces event to cover!
Cardiff 10k
Last weekend also saw the Cardiff 10k and two of the club’s newest runners taking part, with Bethan Osborne and Ceris Hewlings tackling the fast and flat course, which is perfect for new runners or those looking to run a personal best. Both did exceptionally well, with Ceris coming home in 59:17 and Bethan coming home in 57:58, which I think are new personal bests for both, very well done.
Tenby Aces AGM
The Tenby Aces annual general meeting was held recently and very well attended, with lots discussed on the agenda, from format of rides to 10th year anniversary celebrations, so watch this space for some interesting events coming up shortly.
The meeting opened with a guest appearance from Tony Key, of Wales Air Ambulance, to thank the Aces for all their efforts on their fundraising last year.
With vacancies on the committee, there have been a number of changes made, with Carlton Coates moving up to chairman, and the club welcoming new committee members, with Anto O’Hara taking on the role of vice -chairman, John Hubbard coming on board as rides secretary, Colin Barrett coming on as social secretary, and Will Lewis and Dave Poole coming as committee members, with roles yet to be decided, but rest assured they will be found something to do.
The Tuesday and Thursday rides will now have a social cycling group as part of the ride, so please come along and have a chat whilst we cycle and make it fun to be out.
Pembrey Twilight Trail Run
Last Friday saw the running of the Pembrey Twilight Trail Run, with an option of different distances of one lap of 7.5k or two laps giving you a 15k race.
The course offered a mixture of fun trails on very well drained soil, so wasn’t too taxing underfoot,. although it was a twisty and undulating single track, with a couple of sharp kickers put in for good measure, and with the recommendation to wear a head torch due to the time of day it made conditions underfoot a little tricky.
Vicky Jones was taking part from the club and did very well, coming out as winner of the female veteran category over the longer course of 15k.
Sea Swim Sessions
Sea swimming sessions are go again, and not wanting to break with tradition the Aces always try and get in before the end of March. This year, seven members turned up, with a very broad mixture of ages on show, with Poppy Griffiths, Anto O’Hara, Tracey Thomas, Ann Rowell, Sarah Hicks, Des Rees and ring leader Nicola Coates. They had great fun and lasted 20 minutes in the water, with Carlton providing the very essential but warmer beach safety cover.
Red Nose Day Turbo
Great to see so many of the Aces willing to help out giving an hour on the turbo at Tenby Leisure Centre recently in their Turbo for Red Nose Day.
Among them were Jo Brace, Anto O’Hara, Tracey Thomas, Dave Poole, Julie Slack, Niamh Slack, Pippa Dodd and Richard Graham. Well done and a great cause.
