We are certainly getting to the quieter time of year now, with only two members completing activities, although both doing very well. The rest of us were taking a far more relaxed approach and just using a bit of brain training rather than the physical training for a week at least, with the Aces Charity Quiz.
Firstly to the two members who actually took part, with Mandy Draper completing two marathons and Gerald Brace getting a new personal best up at Swansea.
Pumpkin Marathon and the Spooky Halloween Marathon
Never one to shy away from marathon running, Mandy Draper took things to a completely different level last weekend, completing two marathons in one day, with the Pumpkin and Spooky Halloween Marathons in Telford.
Mandy was obviously quick into the entry with these as the numbers were limited to 40, and both run over the same course, with the Pumpkin starting at 9 am and with a strict six-hour finish time, and then to get yourself going again, along with head torch and fancy dress at 4 pm.
This brings Mandy’s total of marathons this year to 15, which I think we all agree is some total - very well done Mandy.
Swansea Bay Park Run
Gerald Brace was taking part in the Swansea Bay Park Run and as always looking to get a personal best each time he runs out. On the results page, though, they have Gerald down as a first timer, and with a new personal best for Gerald of 19:07 for the 5 km run, they must be thinking if that is his result for a first time, what will he be like if he does a bit of training. Well done Gerald, excellent time.
Quiz Night
The club held their charity quiz for the Dai Rees Foundation last Sunday, and, although their were a lot of members who couldn’t make it for one reason or another, a great time was had by all those who were there (we hope that others will be able to attend the next event, especially as it is the Christmas Party).
The quiz had been expertly organised by Billy Connor, Olly Brace and Andrew Burgess, and we were informed that the questions had taken them hours to put together.
We turned up at the Giltar Hotel and we thought firstly that we had arrived straight in the middle of a civil partnership, with Billy and Olly looking like the groom and groom, and with Andrew as the best man. We quickly found out they had dressed up as question masters, with Andrew as official referee.
The teams were mixed up and drawn out of a hat, which was a great way to get the evening going, with husbands, wives and partners being pitted against each other. It was great to have Des and his son Richard present and, although they fully participated, unfortunately neither of them was on the winning team.
There were seven teams all hoping to be crowned champions and win the first prize kindly donated by the Giltar Hotel. The first round started briskly, with it quickly becoming evident that the questions were quite tricky and had clearly been thought through very well, with both Billy and Olly alternating as question master.
The first round saw a number of teams quite closely matched, although this changed to become a two-horse race as the evening progressed (the horse was called Friday, Carlton). There were questions set to test everyone, with Music, TV and Film, Sport and General Knowledge rounds. Some people were at an advantage over others, especially Ann Rowell when it came to a Scandinavian question. And others at a dis-advantage Carlton when most of the music was from the wrong era.
But everyone had a great time and a lot of fun, the eventual winners being Deirdre Bridges, Lloyd Goforth, Jamie Sylvester and Luke Burton, who won by a single point from Nicola Coates, Anto O’Hara, Dan Griffiths and myself.
With the quiz out of the way, it gave the members a chance to socialise and prepare themselves for the raffle, and thanks go out to everyone who donated prizes, especially Elaine Brace and Tesco, who provided two lovely hampers, Janina Louise, who provided a hair appointment, Trefloyne Golf Club, with a golfing voucher, The Moorings, a voucher for cream tea, Paula Smith, a bottle of wine, Adam Brown and Cath Graham, a crate of Stella, amongst other prizes.
The eventual prize winners were Julie Slack (hamper), Donna Bradley (hamper), Aaron Lloyd (golf voucher), Ann Rowell (wine), Jamie Sylvester (wine), Gareth (cream tea coucher), Deirdre (wine)and, yes, we all had a good laugh on the night when I won the cut and blow dry from Janina Louise, more like a spit and polish.
The last raffle prize of a crate of Stella was also won, but donated back to be auctioned to help raise more money for the foundation and Olly did a great job of having Gareth and Tara bidding against each other, until Tara eventually came out as winner, although we are sure that Gareth will get to drink them.
However, the main reason for the evening was to help raise funds for the Dai Rees Foundation and on the night the members that attended and some that couldn’t make it donated and we raised £420, which Des and Richard were thrilled at, and we all had a great chance to have a social evening which some carried on until the small hours of Monday morning.
