SENIOR SECTION
In preparation for the match with Trefloyne Golf Club on Thursday, the senior section played their Spring Cup competitions.
The majority of the senior section played last Thursday on a blustery day on the Barrack Hill course. Wind comes by many names, but blustery on the Barrack Hill has its own meaning - anywhere else it would be called gale force, but the Pembroke club rarely use that term, as when that wind arrives, it is time to batten down the hatches.
The course is now looking in excellent condition. The greenkeepers are producing top quality greens, and there are numbers of visitors commenting on this gem of a golf course.
The competitions were played in determined fashion, with every player out to pick up the silverware, and congratulations go to everyone who helped make the day so successful.
Three cups were on offer, with the following results:
The Alec Munt Cup for the best overall score went to the ever-improving Keith Rees with a very respectable score of 37 points.
The Bill Cobb Cup for the best outward nine holes went to Brian Williams, who shot a classy 19 points.
The Ken May Cup for the best homeward nine holes went to Peter Bowling with a very 'interesting' 21 points.
Nearest the pin went to Harold James, though another player suggested he was using a shorter measure... however, the longest drive went to the mighty hitter John George.
The competition was organised by Chris Clarkson in the absence of Simon Davies, and all agreed we have another first class captain in the making for next season.
We all enjoyed an excellent meal in the South Pembs. clubhouse and, with help from Michael Leighs and his computer, the results were announced after dinner.
JUNIOR SECTION
Secretary Mick Seal and assistant Chris Clarkson are very happy with the number of new juniors joining the club, and lessons are taking place every week, with most evenings some extra lessons also provided by head coach Robert Ryder.
New members will find a very warm welcome and the companionship at South Pembs. GC will take some beating. For those interested, please ring (01646) 621453.
Janet Norris is in charge of Fairways Restaurant and invites you to visit the sociable clubhouse.
