Everything appears to be going well so far this season. Our two teams in the Welsh Classic both won their matches. The A team, led by Chris Clarkson, beat Neath B at home 3-0, while our B team, skippered by Simon Davies, beat Carmarthen B by the same score.

Visit to Newport Links: You know you are in for a battering from the elements, when you see the seagulls walking up from the beach and hiding in the bus shelters, and so it proved last Thursday.

Captain Simon Davies led his merry band of warriors into the white hot furnace of Newport Links, with weather hard to describe; suffice to say the wind blew many good shots deep into the long grass.

The home team, having a distinct advantage, did their level best to beat the men from South Pembs. Golf Club, but superior fitness and downright cunning (in some cases) were enough to produce a notable away win for the visitors.

The results of each match were as follows:

Simon Davies and Harold James won on the last green, with birthday boy Harold slotting in a nine-foot putt (it was six-foot, but due to the length of the evening it grew somewhat).

Angus and Richard Caley had their hands full taking on Alun Griffiths and Glyn Evans, with the home team winning 7 and 6

'Mr. Reliable' Brian Williams and classy Kevin Dewhurst were too much for local favourites John Farham and Simon Lamb, winning 4 and 3.

Old smoothie 'Jock' McCormack and our banker Brian Phillips upset the odds against Roy Evans and Len Forrest to earn another away win 3 and 2.

Top notcher Bob Veale and well handicapped Roy Harris were too strong for the Newport pair of Chris James and Sam Curtis and came in with a 4 and 3 victory.

The final two matches saw no holds barred, with the home team getting home in front in both.

Chris Clarkson (chipped in for two) and Peter Bowling could not hold the well handicapped pair of Ny Evans and Richard Wormslet, going down 3 and 2, while Nigel Williams and Keith fought to the death before going down on the 17th to John Collingridge and Mike Owen 2 and 1.

Good companionship and sportsmanship were the order of the day; and we all enjoyed an excellent meal and some amusing stories.

So the day ended as we set off home with the seagulls still waiting in the shelters.

Final score: South Pembs. 5 Newport Links 3.

LADIES' SECTION

Weather has disrupted the Ladies' Section at South Pembrokeshire Golf Club, but the winner of the Medal and Dragon Brooch competitions on May 2 was Ria Phillips with a score of 76 net; second was Lyn Rees with 82. The competition was played in beautiful weather.

In contrast, the weather on May 9 for the Spring Cup was dreadful, but there was still a good turnout. Sue Harris won the competition with 29 stableford points, with Mary Mountney second on 28.

Sharon Kaye and Lyn Rees took on the St. Davids Golf Club pair in the Daily Mail foursomes competition, but lost on the 18th. Again this was played in atrocious weather, with poor visibility.
