Seniors v

GLYN ABBEY

Glyn Abbey Golf Club, one of the strongest clubs in the senior West Wales group, once again brought their formidable army down to South Pembs. Golf Club.

In what turned out to be very pleasant, but testing conditions, the battle was joined in good fun and sportsmanship, with South Pembs. finally winning 5.5 to 3.5.

The match started on a cold and blustery lunchtime with the captain, Simon Davies, paired with Dave Howes, against their captain, Mal Hughes, and Gary Davies. Simon's drive on the fourth was something to behold, putting him in a place close to the gorse on the 17th that he had never been before. However, he was not put off as they won overall 2 and 1.

Second off were Keith Rees and Mac McCormack against Ken Chislet and Myrddin Rees, who they hammered 7 and 5.

Third off were Phil Watts and Brian Phillips against Norman Williams and Wynn Williams. This was a close game, which the Glyn Abbey pair were leading by three holes at the halfway stage. However, the South Pembs pairing fought back with some excellent golf to win on the 18th green.

Fourth pair was the Panzer pair of Frank O'Sullivan and his driver Eric Pennington against Brian John and Peter Saunders. It proved an excellent match, which the Glyn Abbey pair won with the final putt on the 18th green. First match that the Panzers have lost for some time.

Fifth pairing was Bob Veale and Peter Johnston, some would say our strongest pairing, and they won handsomely 3 and 2 against Jeff Rees and Roger Fiddler. In fact, because we were under orders to play the full 18 holes, they won the final two holes as well.

Next off were Harold James and Mike Bradney against Mike Wilkins and Roy Griffiths. Mike Wilkins plays off five and on the day played to his handicap with a superb display of birdies and pars. On the few occasions that he failed, Roy, his partner, off 14, came to the rescue. So even though Mike Bradney received 11 shots, they were well beaten 6 and 4.

Dai Evans and Keith Leverton were against Brian Miles and Mike Bowen and duly won 3 and 2.

Our captain of vice, in-form Chris Clarkson, was paired with Kevin Dewhurst against Lawson Williams and Roger Davies. It was a tense, close match, which ended with honours even.

The final match, because of some confusion, left Nigel Williams by himself against the mighty pairing of Eddy Alderton and Dai Rees. Heroic though Nigel played, he was eventually ground down by superior numbers and lost closely by 2 and 1.

Afterwards, an excellent three-course meal was provided by Janet, which the lads from Glyn Abbey unanimously proclaimed was the best meal they have had anywhere on the circuit.
