Sailing last weekend continued with the next two races of the Late season on a grey Sunday morning.
There was a steady F4 wind blowing, which made a pleasant change to the comically light winds that the previous few months have seen. Six boats made it out onto the water for the start of the first race, which the OOD had set as a Monkstone-Pendine-Harbour course.
It was a close first leg up to the Monkstone buoy, with Paul and Julia in the RS200 making it round the mark first, closely followed by Keith and Rosie in the Laser Radials. Despite being up with that group to start with, Dave in the Solo ended up at the back after a capsize which left his boat full of water!
However, he quickly caught up and was the third boat to make it round the Harbour buoy after one lap.
All boats completed two laps, as the OOD was keen to leave enough time to fit another race in. Overall, Dave came first (even after his capsize!) and Keith and Rosie came joint second.
The wind remained steady and the course stayed the same for the next race. This time, only four boats made it to the start line for the beginning of the race. Again, it was a close race up to the Monkstone mark and continued to be close up to the Pendine buoy.
However, a spectacular inverted capsize from Keith left him trailing behind the others. Paul and Julia made it around the Harbour Mark first, followed by Rosie who had managed to overtake Dave on the beat.
For the second lap, Paul and Julia stayed in the lead on the water, followed by Dave, then and Rosie and Keith.
Overall, Dave was first once again, Paul and Julia were second and Rosie was third. Thanks as ever go to Ed and Alison on OOD and to Malcolm, James and Steve on rescue duty.
Tomorrow (Saturday) at 4.30 pm, there is a fun night planned for the rowers to come and have a go at sailing and the sailors to have a go at rowing! This will be a great opportunity to have a go at a new activity and meet some new members from each club. The bar will be open to members after the event so come up to the club for a pint!
Whilst all of this has been going, Jo Musson has been competing at the RS100 championships in Weymouth. After a week of racing, she was first lady overall. A big well done goes to Jo for her achievement!
Racing continues on Sunday at 5 pm. See you there!
