The first weekend of August saw a right old mixture of weather, typical for the school holidays starting off. On Saturday, a fresh breeze and sunshine made for the first of the ‘fun races’ run by Malcolm, Paul and Frank, with Frank also being chief rigger.
A small triangular course was set just beyond the harbour and the fleet of four Toppers and one Laser enjoyed close and exciting racing, plus some informal coaching, and at the end, both races were won by Thomas with Leon winning the swimming competition and good progress made by Rhys and the second Thomas who unfortunately ended up with a smaller Topper sail than the others.
Afterwards, Nina, John and Alison manned the bar and the hot dog stand and a pleasant evening was had by all. Further sessions are in the pipeline subject to availability and response.
The Sunday started off well, but wet and windy conditions, plus poor visibility, saw race officer Mick having to cancel the racing for the day. The lady and junior helm races which were due to happen within the club races on this day will now be rearranged.
On the Monday, Jo and Malcolm had organised a day trip/sail to Tenby with Leon and Thomas in Toppers, plus Steve in his Laser and Ann and Christine this time in the Laser 2000, escorted and coached along the way by Malcolm and Jo in two safety boats and followed by three SSC cruisers in the shape of Elgar, Sherpa Mor and Dizzy. They all landed at Tenby and met at Tenby Sailing Club on the harbour for refreshments before the three Cruisers carried on to Caldey for lunch with the whole fleet returning later in the day to Saundersfoot.
This was a great day out and thanks to Malcolm and Jo for arranging it; hopefully this sort of day out will be repeated again soon.
This coming weekend, we have two races scheduled for Sunday, starting at 10 am, with Dave and Sue in charge so hopefully the weather will have improved by then.
