The race on Sunday saw a bumper turnout of 16 boats, including seven Lasers and a few new faces (plus Steve Hinksman on his 65th birthday) on another lovely sunny afternoon.
The wind was swirling around a bit, but the race team of Simon and Sue sent the fleet off on a Pendine Monkstone harbour course. As per the last few weeks, Katy, Harry and James, under Harry’s guidance, were first away, pursued by the massed Laser fleet, led by Jenny on her first outing, together with many of the usual culprits, while the new faces included Thomas crewing for Jo in the 2000, plus Iolo in a Topper.
The gusty and shifty wind saw many changes of position and direction, but coping best at the end of three or four laps, the win was taken again by James continuing his good form, followed by Ben, back from his Tall Ships adventure, and then Jenny, ahead of Paul and Julia, then Jo and new recruit Thomas.
Thanks to Simon and Sue for running the race, plus John, Nina, Rosie and the adopted Mammatt Malcolm on safety.
Last week’s report seems to have gone astray so here is a brief recap of what happened.
The weekend of July 15/16 kicked-off on the Saturday with the first TenFoot Swim and trek from Tenby to Saundersfoot in aid of local charities Rory Rogers and Bloodwise as reported elsewhere when 175 intrepid swimmers took part in this arduous event, including our very own former Ironman James Hayden, while three of our safety boats joined the small armada of boats, kayaks and other craft so a big thank you to Mick , Andy , Martin, another Andy, plus John and Rosie for keeping an eye on the swimmers.
The whole day seemed to be a great success culminating in the TenFoot concert at the Regency Hall when the safety crew, plus partners and the Dizzy crew replenished liquids as required.
The following day saw a dull and dreary start for the latest club races, but 11 boats made it out, including James, who certainly looked more awake than the Dizzy crew, now back in the RS200.
The race team of Tom and Alison set a Amroth Pendine harbour course as mirrored on course by Nina doing a fine job of displaying the new course board on the Flyer in what was a pleasant breeze, and with a couple of broad reaches before a beat back to the harbour, taking first place overall was James in the Phantom still fresh from the TenFoot Swim followed by Dave in his Solo, while Paul and Julia faded on the last lap to see Maurice on his return take third place.
The fading wind and visibility, plus technical problems with the race mast/halyards saw Tom and Alison have to cancel the second race but a big thanks to them for the first race, plus Paul and Sam in one safety with supermodel Nina combining her modelling of the course board with photography duties leaving Tom to steer the Flyer round safely.
Back to this week and Jo and all of her helpers are running courses during the week for many of our trainees, including some of those who have already joined us in the club races, so far in excellent conditions and we look forward to them joining us on Sundays.
This weekend, we have two races bringing the hotly-contested mid-season points series to a close starting at 1030 on Sunday. Jo is having a much-needed and well-deserved rest from sailing and is running the race.
