winter summary

There may not have been much winter sailing going on, but the club has been a den of activity. All the recent socials have been sold out and membership seems to be taking on a new dimension with the rowing club joining in large numbers and almost every weekend there is a training session going on for new trainers or maybe juniors and new members being trainined in the art of a Celtic longboat.

Great to see the club being used so much, and along with all this the club has seen some extensive changes with regard to the new Bosun’s Locker being developed for boat repairs and engine maintenance by club members in a dry and warm environment.

Darts and

Skittles

There was a suggestion that all the sailing club had to do to retain the darts trophy was to just turn up, well as it turned out it may have been less embarrassing if we had not turned up at all as it did look as though the Wiseman’s rowers were playing like Phil the power Taylor and the Craft cockney all rolled into one. Well done on a great win and almost a whitewash except for some skilful darts by the love boat crew Julia Griffiths, but there will be a rematch.

A big thank you to both Nina Mammatt and Andy Richards for organising a fab night with some great free food that went down a treat during the evening so thanks to Andy and Jo for sorting that.

There were some trial beers on offer behind the bar from Tenby brewery and it looks like the ‘Barefoot Blonde’ will be making it’s way behind the bar on a few more occasions due to it being voted top beer for the night.

Andy Williams from the harbour won the overall skittles and went home with a coveted trophy to put on the mantle piece, Lloyd won the junior skittles and of course Wiseman’s won the darts.

There was a rumour that the bar made a good profit even though the beers were all being sold at discount prices so everyone a winner there and thanks to Mark, Jo and Andy for running the bar as well.

Behind the

scenes at SSC

There is a lot going on down at the club these days getting ready for the new season, the new Bosun’s Locker is progressing and now available for boat and engine repairs just contact Mick for details and use. Terry as always spends an enormous amount of time both at the club and at home making and repairing equipment. One of his recent quests has been to get the right weights on the bottom of the yellow pin buoys and in a container that will not damage the boat and is easy to carry. Well with an old sail and a sowing machine you can do wonders so well done Terry.

The new locker doors have been in need of some TLC ready for the new signs going up and along came Paul with his paint brush and artistry skills.

Something we do not see or often hear about is Rob and his conquest to ensure the club keeps it’s five star hygiene rating and he has done it again with the club last week being rated top marks so thanks Rob for all your work on this behind the scenes.

Then of course there is all the work going on to organise the fleet of rescue boats ready to start the season in tip top condition and one at least with a new engine. The Flyer has been delivered back from Pembrokeshire Sports Boats after some TLC and an engine maintenance.

I did of course have to take it out with Terry and Hugh from PSB to give it a test but it is I can assure you hard work spinning around the bay in glorious sunshine and flat sea but someone has to it!

Of course we also cannot forget John upstairs sorting out the mountain of flags and OOD kit ready for club racing and Coppet Week, my goodness we are going to be organised soon.

Thanks to all for helping and see you next week.

Rowers at the club

The sailing club really is moving in a different direction and managing to keep the resources of a great building in a top location being used during the winter and through the day, as well as at weekends.

Wiseman’s Bridge ran two training sessions from the harbour and the club was a great asset to come back to for not only equipment storage but to warm up.

There are a number of SC members already rowing, but opportunities will be made available for other club members to have a try at rowing and also the rowers have shown an interest in sailing, as well which can’t be bad.

RNLI SOS

Friday, January 29, was a good day for for the sailing club and an even better day for the RNLI as the Saundersfoot RNLI fundraisers managed to serve up 74 hungry customers in the sailing club with an excellent choice of two very tasty soups, along with some tea and coffee. Well-supported by everyone and well done to all on the fundraising team.

Wind, Waves and Beaches

If you like and live around the beach, play in the sea on boats of every size and ever thought about boat handling and safety then maybe this evening of nautical entertainment will have you fixed on the side of your seats.

The club is very lucky to have booked the local nautical knowledge of Captain Mark Attwell at not too much expense to come along and pass on his years of nautical experience to an expectant crowd of sailing club members.

The word on the street is already out there and this could be another social draw that is up there, along with ‘Monsters of the Deep’ which we all remember from our last talk on all things nautical.

Don’t forget the bar will be open and at prices for some selected wines and beers that cannot be beaten so put the date in your diary and see you there.

Time - 7.30, date - tonight (Friday) at the sailing club.
