PEMBROKE DOCK HARLEQUINS 25 pts LLANGWM 10
The Quins pulled off their second league win of the season and a bonus point to boot, in a fairly even contest at Bierspool on Saturday.
It was the Quins who struck first when hooker Carl Williams forced his way over after just 10 minutes; Ben Hathaway missed the conversion from wide out.
From then on, Llangwm had the territorial advantage and it wasn’t long before they capitalised when right wing Steven Picton punished a Quins discretion with a well-struck penalty to reduce the arrears.
Ben Hathaway, however, soon replied with a well-struck penalty of his own.
With 10 minutes of the half still left, the Quins struck twice, first after a fine chip over the top by Ben Hathaway caused panic in the Wasps ranks, which set up a try for outstanding man-of-the-match debutant flanker Hywel Baker, who powered his way over. Then just before the break, tighthead prop Josh Boswell was driven over for the Quins’ third try. Neither was converted from wide out by Ben Hathaway.
The Quins, with a 20-3 lead at half-time, had their work cut out as the second half started as the Wasps pressed hard to try and get something out of the game, and it was not long before they were rewarded when number eight Gareth Lawlor finished off a fine move. Steve Picton popped over the conversion to reduce the score to 20-10.
The Wasps now had a fine opportunity to take something from the game and deny the Quins a bonus point, but sadly for the visitors it was the Quins who struck. With talismanic prop Dean Wilcox upping the ante, the Quins scored a fine try when second row Liam Scourfield went on a superb run down the touchline before offloading out the back boor to send Quins centre and captain Thomas Doyle over in the corner to complete the scoring.
The Quins’ next fixture is away at Pembroke on December 17.
