Pembroke Dock Quins 19 - St Davids 10: The Quins pulled off their second victory of the season in this bottom of the table clash at Bierspool, which had the staggering statistic of no less than 35 penalties being awarded during the match!
It was the Quins who struck first in the third minute, when young scrum half Gethin Bradney charged down an attempted clearance kick, and despite the awkward bounce his elder brother and outside half Rhys Bradney touched down wide out to give the Quins a five point lead.
He missed the conversion in drop goal fashion.
If the Quins thought they would run away with the game they were very much mistaken as the Saints rallied, and with their scrum in the ascendancy, made life difficult for the Quins’ eight.
With the Quins lineout not functioning as well as the previous week, possession and territory was going very much in the Saints favour.
It was not long before the Saints replied with a score of their own when outside half Rhys Morgan slotted an awkward penalty to pull his side back to 5-3.
With the amount of penalties being awarded, the game never got flowing at all, but the Quins did manage a score with the last move of the half when powerful left wing Liam Smith was put clear after a rare bout of fine handling to run round and touch down behind the posts.
Rhys Bradney converted and sent the Quins in at the break 12-3 to the good.
The second half was a long drawn out affair with the amount of penalties being conceded having a huge affect on the game.
The Quins had to wait until 10 minutes from time for their third try when a fine arching run from centre Richard Jones ended with the ball firmly in Liam Smith’s hands, and from there on in there was no stopping the winger as he touched down wide out.
Rhys Bradney converted from the touchline with a magnificent kick to put the Quins 19-3 up.
The hosts now had the scent of a try bonus point, but it was not going to come as the game was still marred by the plethora of penalties.
Five minutes from time the Saints were awarded a penalty try when centre Gabe York was taken out when a certain try looked on, and with just a few minutes left, both sides failed to get the Bonus Point they were after.
