Kidwelly 32 pts. Tenby United 22
At this time of the season, sitting at the foot of the league table with relegation decided, with 19 games played and lost, which coming off the back of six losses at the end of last season makes it a very long and arduous losing streak, and with another three more league games to play, was not the ideal scenario for G. D. Harries sponsored Tenby United to travel to take on fourth-placed Kidwelly.
But, with all the odds stacked against them, Tenby put in a solid performance in the first half and turned around with a narrow lead, only to yet again lose their momentum during the early to mid-period of the second half, allowing the home side to come away with a bonus point victory. This is a trend that has dogged Tenby for most of the season, which was on Saturday somewhat countered with a rally by them in the final 10 minutes of the game.
The blustery crossfield wind favoured neither side, but a fundamental handling error following the kick-off gave the home side the start they needed as wing Gareth Rees slotted his first shot at goal, giving Kidwelly the early buffer of a 3-0 lead.
Things could have got worse as at the restart the ball did not travel the necessary 10 metres and only over enthusiasm by the home side, who decided to play the ball, gave a scrum to Tenby following a knock-on.
Luke Hansford injected some urgency into his team by stripping the ball from an attacking player and surging forward towards the Kidwelly 22, with the resulting over-the-top infringement by a defending player offering Scott James the opportunity to get Tenby on the scoreboard, but the crosswind and lack of power saw his effort fall short.
Hansford was quickly back into action, linking neatly with impressive centre Jordan Asparassa, who in turn passed the ball to the supporting Dan Colley, who crashed over the line for a fine try, which was converted by Scott James, taking Tenby out to a deserved 7-3 lead with only 12 minutes played.
As the half progressed, both sides created opportunities, which unfortunately were not turned into points - the classic being when home centre Declan Knox made a superb break and, with two men unmarked outside him, decided to kick the ball, which sailed aimlessly into touch.
With the half meandering to a close, Kidwelly strung a series of passes together, ending with outside-half Robin Davies crossing the Tenby line for an unconverted try and a narrow 8-7 lead, which was short-lived as Scott James fired over a penalty for offside at the breakdown, which took Tenby into the break with a 10-8 lead.
Whatever was said by the home coaching side at half-time had the desired effect as cleanly taking the kick-off, fly-half Robin Davies launched a siege gun of a clearance kick which took play to within metres of the Tenby line and, from the resulting lineout, classy number eight and captain Jonathan Williams was driven over the line by his supporting forwards, taking the score out to 13-10.
Undaunted by this latest set-back, Tenby manoeuvred a situation from an attacking scrum where hard-working number eight Rob Weston was put clear with a simple short run for the line, only for referee Daniel Thomas to correctly penalise flanker Timoci Kaumaitotoya, who had illegally and irresponsibly held back a home forward.
With the home side continuing to pick up the pace ,a situation that could have seen Tenby 15-13 (or 17) in front in reality turned into an 18-10 deficit as home scrum-half, Alex Davies, exploited some sloppy defending around a scrum to go over unopposed for an unconverted try.
Tenby totally went off the boil following this latest set-back and allowed Kidwelly to extend their lead as fly-half Robin Davies spotted a totally unguarded blind-side gap and strolled over for try number four and a bonus point. With Rees adding the extras, a sizeable lead of 25-10 to the home side had developed during what turned out to be a disastrous 10-minute spell for Tenby.
The situation was aggravated when unaccountably, and in quick succession, both the Tenby half-backs created situations where the ball was turned over by the rampaging home back row which released centre Ricky Williams to score try number five, converted by Gareth Rees, taking the score out to an even more comfortable 32-10.
With the game won, the home sided rolled on their replacements which, as always, creates a potential opportunity for the opposition to test the new combinations and, seizing on the moment, Scott James went over to close the scores to 32-15.
Ironically with a series of minor injuries and wheeling on their replacements, the new combinations created by Tenby quickly gelled and led to a brief period where they played their most impressive rugby of the match and as a reward for their enterprising play, Dan Colley, now playing at fly-half, was put clear by Rob Luly to go over the try line for his second try of the day. With Jimmy Davies adding the extras and a degree of respectability to the score, the game closed with the home side emerging as 32-22 victors.
With the run-in to the end of this extended season now in sight, Tenby have a home game against Waunarlwydd tomorrow (Saturday) at Heywood Lane, which will be followed with a local derby up at Crymych a week Saturday on May 7, with the semi-final of the Pembrokeshire Cup up at Whitland proposed for Tuesday May 10 (which needs to be confirmed) and a final home league game against Gowerton scheduled for Saturday, May 14. Your support for coaches Chris James and Richard Rossiter along with the team, for all these games, would be very much appreciated.
