Dunvant 31 pts.Whitland 21
Buoyed by their success in the WRU Plate competition, Whitland went into Saturday’s match at Dunvant with hopes of causing an upset.
But the currrent Division One West leaders obviously had other ideas as, after a cagey start, they rocked the Borderers with a try blitz which saw them establish a 26-0 lead by the interval.
Touchdowns came from second row Hayden Baldwin, captain Mitchell Ford, centres Danny Davies and Sam Crowley, with outside-half James Davies adding the extras to three of them.
Baldwin added a second after the break and at this stage Whitland could have been forgiven if they had thrown the towel in.
But far from it; the Borderers never let their head drops and began to stage a formidable fightback which had Dunvant back-pedalling.
Gradually the deficit began to be reduced as tries came from back row man Marc Jones, fullback Jonathan Thomas and second row John Gardiner, with fly-half Nico Setaro converting all three.
But unfortunately they had left themselves just too much to do and, despite their brave efforts in the closing stages, they eventually came up just short.
