Saundersfoot Sports Club (sponsored by LG Leisure Ltd) played away to the Balfour Club in Haverfordwest on Monday evening in their latest league match and were 3-2 losers.
The first frame saw Dave Wooles play Ray Hoare. Dave started slowly, going behind by 20 points early on. Gradually he began to nibble away at Ray’s lead, though, and by midframe was only 10 points adrift. However. Ray started to click and pulled away again, leading by 27 points by the colours. Dave battled on bravely, but to no avail.
The second frame saw Darren Morgan play Simon Pearce. Simon, the form player, struck first, opening up a small lead, but Darren is the Saundersfoot form player and was definitely giving Simon a match. As the frame got to the midway point, Darren was 20 points behind and as it progressed further, it was the Balfour man who was playing the better. Darren battled back and closed the gap to just one point on the brown, making it anyone’s frame, but Simon then cleared the remaining colours to win (good frame).
The third frame saw captain Glyn Davies play Anthony Griffiths. Glyn started well enough, but imploded mid-frame. By the brown, Anthony was 20 points to the good and then produced two outrageous snookers to win.
The fourth frame saw Mark Cleevely play Terry McBride. Mark started the brighter, opening up a small lead, and by mid-frame had stretched this to 20 points. Mark was playing cautiously, but well, and by the colours he was still holding a 10-point advantage. With just the colours remaining, this was anyone’s frame, but Mark then took an excellent pink to win.
The final frame saw a returning Steve Cook (welcome back) play Alan Griffiths. Steve, out of the game for a number of years, still showed his class and was soon ahead. By mid-frame, though, things got a bit bogged down, with the Balfour man edging it by 13 point. Nevetheless, Steve produced a crucial 23-point break to take command and was 16 points ahead coming to the colours. He then potted most of the remaining balls to make it a winning return.
