This has been a strange year for the AJO Memorial. For the first time in the event’s 15-year history, the two legs were not played on consecutive Saturdays. Furthermore, there could not have been a bigger contrast in the weather for the rounds.
First Leg
At Tenby on June 10 the conditions were horrendous - heavy rain coupled with a gale force wind throughout the day. Only 33 cards were taken out - 27 men and six ladies.
A score in the mid 20s was creditable. Andrew Cope (Tenby) had 30 points. Gavin Scotcher (Trefloyne) was one better. However, the winner at Tenby was Trefloyne’s Simon Wood with an excellent 34 points.
Woody or
Wouldn’t He?
The second leg at Trefloyne was held last Sunday in glorious sunshine.
Unfortunately, for various reasons, including the poor weather for the first leg, the turnout was again low, i.e. 36 men and 14 ladies.
Twenty-two men scored at least 30 points. Tenby’s Martin Neilan 35 points and Trefloyne’s Mel Neale at 36 points.
Paul Jenkins (Tenby) and Richard Cope (Trefloyne) both scored a fine 38 points.
Andrew Cope’s 30 points meant that he was out of the running for the AJO Bowl.
This was now a two-horse race between the Trefloyne pair of Gavin Scotcher and Simon Wood.
Simon held his nerve and came in with 36 points, the only blemish being on the 15th where he twice visited the trees.
His 36-hole aggregate of 70 points would have been good enough to claim the AJO Bowl in previous years.
However, Gavin had one of the rounds of his life. Playing off a handicap of two, he came in with a fabulous 40 points. His two under par round included four birdies. Gavin’s two round total of 71 points means that he is the AJO Bowl champion for the second consecutive year.
Tenby Observer Cup
This is awarded to the player with the best ‘gross’ scores over the 36 holes. None of the other competitors got anywhere near Gavin’s 67 points.
Gavin was the holder of the Tenby Observer Cup and consequently he has now claimed a ‘double double’ which is a wonderful achievement in local golf.
The Ladies
At Tenby, home player Sarah Waring led the field by two with 26 points.
As with the men, the scoring at Trefloyne was better. Maura Gunning (Tenby) had 30 points, but the winner on the day was Sue Shooter (Tenby) with 33 points.
However, the 2017 Ladies AJO Bowl champion is Sarah. She added 24 points to her first round of 26 points for a total of 50 points.
Prize money lists are now displayed at both Tenby and Trefloyne Golf Clubs.
Competitors are advised to collect their winnings as soon as possible. The leading scores were as follows:

SENIORS
Last Thursday, the Trefloyne Manor Seniors gathered for their Championship (writes Seniors captain John Drury). The day was good and the course was in excellent condition, although the recent rain had slowed it down a little.
Thirty-two budding champions set out to do battle to see who would sit top of the pile .
At the end, it turned out to be very tight at the top of the leader board, with only four points covering the top 11 players and countback having to split the top two.
Results: 1. Dennis Holloway, on countback 38 pts; 2. John Richards 38; 3. John Drury 37.
There were two 2s, by Gareth Roberts on the sixth hole and Mike Allen on the 12th.
My thanks to all who played and to Ollie for organising it all and well done Dennis.
