Thursday, June 23, saw the Trefloyne Seniors arrive at the verdant course that is Priskilly Forest Golf Club. With a fair day forecast, and the course in excellent condition, although the greens got very rapid second time around, close games were expected.
Leading off was Mike Allen with Barry Wood, playing Ted Rogers and Don MacWalker. Not a lot is known about this game, although the consensus was that Don played a lot better than his 23 handicap, Trefloyne losing 7 and 6.
Second off were Darrell Jones with Graham Harrison, playing Joe Hewlin and Graham Davies. After sharing the first two holes, the Trefloyne pair took a three-hole lead after six. The home pair then won the next two to be one down after the first nine. A win on the 10th for Trefloyne was countered by wins on the next two holes for Priskilly to level the match. However, wins on the 13th and 15th gave the advantage once again to Trefloyne, and although Priskilly won the 16th, a half on the17th was enough to give Trefloyne victory by 2 and 1.
The third match featured Derek Jones partnered by Keith Warmington, playing Glyn Price and Ian Foster. In a tight front nine which saw Trefloyne lead by one hole, Priskilly fought back, winning two of the the next four, Trefloyne winning one, to level the match with five to play. Any further hopes of a fightback were quickly ended with the Trefloyne pair winning the next three holes to win 3 and 2.
Next to play were Roger Woodward and Wayne Connett, playing Ken Cornelius and Brian Jones. After losing the second, the Trefloyne pair took command, winning the next six holes to take a four-hole lead, although this was cut to three when the home pair won the ninth. Wins on the 10th and 12th extended the lead to five and halves on the next two holes were enough to give the Trefloyne pair a 5 and 4 win.
The fifth match saw Dennis Holloway pair up with John Richards, to play John Castle and Peter Billet. Wins on the third, fourth and fifth by Trefloyne were countered by wins on the seventh and eighth for Priskilly, to give Trefloyne a one-hole lead going out on the second circuit. After halves on the next three holes, the Trefloyne pair won three of the next four to win the match 4 and 2.
Match six featured Steve Jones with Ian Whiting, playing Jeff Thorne and Ren Jeffreys. In a tight match, the Priskilly pair won the fifth and held this slim advantage going out onto the second circuit. The back nine was equally close, Trefloyne winning the 10th, but Priskilly winning 11 to regain the lead. A win on the 13th for Priskilly was countered by wins on 14 and 16 for Trefloyne to level the match with two to play. Unfortunately for the Trefloyne pair, the Priskilly pair found an extra gear to win the last two holes to win 2 up.
The next match paired Jack Zeraschi with John Drury, to play Randall Griffiths and Tony Williams. A win on the first for Trefloyne was countered by a win on the third for Priskilly. The Trefloyne pair then won three of the next four holes to take a three-hole lead onto the second circuit. Further wins on the 11th and 12th extended the lead to five, but the Priskilly pair fought back, winning the 14th, 15th and 16th to cut the lead to two. A half on the 17th was enough to give the Trefloyne pair a 2 and 1 win.
The final match featured Bob Forest and Rob Nixon, playing Phil Smith and Billy Watson. This was a tight match with little between both pairs, the match ending all-square.
Final result: Trefloyne 5.5 Priskilly Forest 2.5.
