Stronger, fitter and younger are usually adjectives used for the likes of a rugby team or boxers. However, they also applied to the big hitting Machynys team last Saturday.
The Jack Nicklaus designed course was in an excellent condition and a stiff easterly blew throughout the afternoon.
In the top game, Luke Harries and Alan Webster were one-up after six holes but then lost three on the bounce and eventually fell by four and two to Nick Davies and Ryan Greaney.
Gavin Scotcher and Rhys Davies were two down after just three against Andrew Lewis and Mal Evans. Despite several birdies they could not claw back the deficit and lost by three and two.
It was an identical score for Dave Morris and Darren Thomas. Initially, play was rather scrappy but improved later on. Dave birdied the tough 15th and 16th holes against Geraint Hammond and Machynys captain Wyn Lloyd, but won neither!
Paul Jenkins and Martin Morris were two up after seven but conceded eight and nine. They were still in contention to the very end before going down by just one hole to Dan Rees and Simon Williams.
Jon Bolter and Neil Thomas faced former professional rugby player Gavin Quinnell and Dai Cole. They were four down early on and never recovered before losing four and three. They also lost the post golf eating competition.
In the last three games, the Tenby pairs were holding their own, but faded towards the end. Steve Sutcliffe and Loz Phillips were beaten by Warren Williams and Rhys Gordge by three and two.
Similarly, John Broomhead and Adam Thorne fell by the same score to Dai Joel and Gareth Llewelyn.
It was also a three and two defeat for Lee Lewis and Gary McNeilly against Mike John and Wayne Davies in the final game.
It is many years since a Tenby side lost all the games in a Dyfed League match. To put things into perspective, Machynys are very strong and are arguably favourites for promotion to Divison One. They have already halved their match at Ashburnham and were convincing winners away at Glynhir.
Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenby need to regroup and put the Machynys result behind them when they face Glynhir at home.
