Thirty-three enthusiastic golfers presented themselves at the club on Tuesday, keen to improve their eclectic performance - and possibly to top the day’s scoring list and win a prize. The weather was really pleasant, although the wind did freshen during the round and at least one sweater was mandatory, while the course was in very good condition.
Playing in three and four ball groups (with just one two ball), the 11 matches had a two-tee start, and soon got down to the business of extracting pars and birdies from the ungenerous links, with varying degrees of success. Did I mention the savage and unforgiving rough? Guess what - it was unforgiving and savage! Best not to go there!
There were some flashes of brilliance; David Lamb scored 11 points from three holes, and had he continued at this remarkable rate he would have shattered the club record with a score of 66 Stableford points! Sadly he didn’t, but even his actual score of 33 gave him considerable pleasure.
The rest of the scoring covered a range of 20 shots, and the winners were:
In third place with 35 points - Richard Davies. In second place with 38 points - Mel Neale, and in top spot with an enviable 40 points - Geoff Aston. Both Mel and Geoff have not enjoyed the best of health recently, so their splendid performance is to be applauded.
The handicap secretary snatched two strokes from Geoff’s handicap, while our treasurer, Stan Hudson, ensured that these champions were rewarded with much gold - as was the sole scorer of a two. Bob Howse was the man, and not content with simply scoring a two - he did it on the par four fifth hole - now that doesn’t happen very often!
I think the photograph captures the mood of the day; the three beaming faces on the first tee belong to - from right, Seniors captain Dudley Williams, Seniors vice-captain Idwal David – and Whatsisname!
And finally, the charity raffle was won by our competitions secretary, Jim Martin, and I would like to thank the Seniors for their support over these many years for this worthwhile cause.
Next Tuesday is a fun day -we will be playing a Waltz! Strictly Come Dancing eat yer heart out!
