For every captain the weather plays a significant role in the enjoyment of Captain’s Day for both the players and the organiser and Thursday, August 24, turned out to be a very pleasant day weather-wise - not too hot, not cold and - most importantly - NO RAIN! Linda must have been a very busy girl with her prayers for good weather coming up trumps.
Thirty-three ladies and juniors took part in a stableford competition that Linda had divided up into three equal portions of handicaps, a junior prize plus an overall winner prize.
The day began with Linda greeting all the players at the foot of the steps to the clubhouse with a complimentary gift bag which included a much-appreciated Baileys liqueur (with chocolate for the juniors!) and Linda was toasted by at least one of the girls on the first tee with the Baileys. Hospitality continued on the 12th tee with a wonderful spread of sandwiches, quiche and chocolates washed down with plenty of Prosecco, Bucks Fizz or soft drinks if preferred. The treats were very welcome and enjoyed by all. The service was provided by Linda, very ably assisted by golfing friend Jo Walsh Morgan and former member and close-friend Babs Morris, who had travelled down from Cardiff for the day as a guest.
After the golf, the ladies went home to put on their glad-rags and returned for an evening meal at the club where the presentation for the prize-winners followed. It was lovely to see a good crowd of ladies and junior members and the sound of chatter and laughter is always a joy to hear in the club.
Before the winners were announced, Linda said a few words, thanking everyone who had helped to make the day such a success and also introduced her other guest for the evening, her daughter Jemima, who didn’t have to sing for her supper, but had to adopt the role of official photographer - and what a good job she made of it as you can see.
On to the prizes. The junior prize voucher was awarded to Seren Allen in a close-run family thing, just pipping her sister Nel on countback on 37 points (winning chocolates), with Kasumi Tran third on 34 (winning a scorecard holder).
Division three (30-36) saw the three prize-winners being Pat Fox first with a breath-taking (!) 41 points (resulting in a two-shot handicap cut), ahead of Sue Ensor on 33 and Trevayne Keohane on 24.
Division two (22-29) was first place for Anna Hubbard with an excellent 42, just ahead of Irene Gilman on 41 (both also getting two-shot handicap reductions) and Anne Wilks third on 35 points.
Prize winners in division one (up to 21) were first Fair Ball on 36 on countback from Helen Hughes in second place, with Pam Cole third on 35 points. The top three in each division each received a voucher plus a bottle of Prosecco.
Pat Fox had a very successful day - not only winning her division, but also picking up both the Granny Salver and the Veterans Salver.
The overall winner on the day was Sarah Waring who scored a brilliant 42 points, which resulted in her also getting a voucher, a bottle, as well as a two-shot cut in her handicap.
Congratulations to all the winners and well played everyone.
All the entry fees plus supplementary donations will be totalled and go towards Linda’s captain’s charity - the Stroke Association.
At the end of the proceedings, thanks were extended to captain Linda for her generosity, hospitality and prizes on what was a very well organised Captain’s Day. Hope next year’s event goes as smoothly!
