South Pembs. Ladies play on in spite of the weather

I have been Lady Captain at South Pembs. for four months now, which is one-third of my tenancy and the time has just flown by. The green staff have worked very hard over the winter and that has allowed us to play some competitions in spite of the storms which have hit the headland.

Last Wednesday, it was so windy that some of us had difficulty opening the car door and we thought we would have to turn round and go home.

The 18-hole Stableford played on October 28 was won by Lynne Rees with 33 pts. and runner-up was Ann Williams 32 pts.

A GUW medal took place on November 4. Ros Williams won with a nett 78 and Lynn Messingham was runner-up with a nett 80.

The Stableford played on the same day was won by Hilary Harries and runner-up was Shan Thomas.

The Yellow Ball competition, which is one of the favourites, was played for on November 11. The winning team comprised of Ann Williams, Jane Parsons and Lynne Badham with 48 pts. and runners-up were Lynne Rees, Sharon Kaye and Maggie Power, 34 pts.

The first Christmas competition was postponed until January and Ria Phillips was the winner, Mary Lewis runner-up and Lynne Rees third.

Christmas competition 2 took place on November 25, first being Lynne Rees, second Ria Phillips and third Mary Lewis.

The Christmas competition 3 also took place in January - first Lynn Messingham, second Anita Davies and third Sharon Kaye.

The all-winners took place on December 16, a very miserable day and only four of us went out, but as it was an all-winners, most ladies turned up for lunch with their beautifully wrapped prizes and a good time was had by all.

We played a 14-hole Stableford on February 3, winner being Lynn Messingham 27 pts., runner-up Lynne Rees 20 pts.

A 16-hole Stableford took place on February 10, the winner being Jayne Lewis 30 pts. and runner-up Lynn Messingham 28 pts.

The winner of the winter eclectic was myself, Anita Davies, and only just losing out by 0.5 in second place was Ros Williams.

Lynne Rees and Sharon Kaye played the first round of the Daily Mail foursomes away at Derllys Court against Jud Stephens and Nicola Morris. Lynne and Sharon had previously made the final of this competition and have got off to a fine start this year by winning 6/5. Well done girls and good luck in the next round.

We did not fare so well in the Mail on Sunday Team event, losing to Haverfordwest on their course. We wish Haverfordwest all the best in the next round.

Back in September, our Past Captain Mary Lewis won the Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire County Stableford, but the president was unable to present the trophy owing to the fact that it had been dropped and had broken. A new trophy was purchased and Mary was eventually able to get her hands on it.

We are having our popular Coffee Morning on Tuesday, April 12, at 11 am, so please come and join us. Tickets are £3, you will be able to pay at the door, there will be a cake stall and raffle.

We were very sorry to lose our caterer John and his partner Claire, but we have a new caterer, Russ Fitz-Hugh, and we wish him all the best. The View Restaurant is open for Sunday lunches, so for a pleasant meal overlooking the Haven, book your table by phoning 01646 621453.
