A bright and breezy day welcomed the players for the first Seniors match of the season against Haverfordwest. After the long, wet winter, everyone was raring to go!
Leading off were Trefloyne captain Mike Allen, partnered by Dennis Holloway, against Haverfordwest captain Vernon Harris, partnered by Prakash Kanse. The Trefloyne pairing got off to a quick start, winning the first two holes. Although they then lost the third, Mike and Dennis proceeded to win four of the next six holes to lead by five at the turn. Wins on the 10th and 13th then gave the home pair a 7 and 5 win.
Next to play were Derek Jones partnered by Trevor Lewis, against Steve Goddard and Steve Allen. This was a very close game, with no more than one hole in it either way. All-square on the 18th tee, Derek and Trevor took the last to win one up.
Third to play were Keith Hubbard and John Drury, against Clive Frankton and John James. Keith and John proved slightly too strong for Clive and John in what was another close game, with only one hole in it standing on the last tee. However, this hole went the way of the home pair, winning two up.
Off fourth were Darrell Jones with John Richards, playing Brad Morse and Simon Gough. Although Brad and Simon won the first, Darrell and John then won the next three. A win on the fifth by the away pair cut the lead back to one, but again three wins in a row gave the home pair a commanding four-hole lead. Brad and Simon gave themselves some hope by winning the ninth, but this was short-lived as the Trefloyne pair then won the 10th and the 14th to win the match 6 and 4.
Colin Davies and Steve Jones paired up to play Gelli James and Ray Woodison. Another closely fought game, the away pair hanging on to win one up.
Regular pairing Pat Casement and Keith Warmington played Steve Lewis and Dave Phipps. Steve and Dave won the first two holes, but Pat scooped the 2s pool on the third to cut the lead to one. Steve and Dave then won the fifth, but Pat and Keith fought back, winning the sixth and seventh, before losing the eighth to turn one down. The next four holes changed hands, but a win on the 14th levelled the match. Steve and Dave then won the 16th, but Pat and Keith won 17. A half on the last meant this match ended in a tie.
Bob Forrest teamed up with Rob Nixon in the next match, playing Mal Davies and Fred Curtis. Bob and Rob proved far too strong for their opponents, winning 6 and 5.
Jack Zeraschi and Dave Crowley paired up to play Dai John and Andy Loveridge. A win on the second gave the away pair a good start, followed by a win on the sixth. The home pair fought back, winning the eighth to reach the turn one down. Wins on the 10th and 12th gave Dai and Andy a three-hole lead, but this was cut back to two on the next hole. Although the home pair fought hard, halves on the next four holes were enough to give Dai and Andy a 2 and 1 win.
John Perrott teamed up with Roger Hancock to play James Griffiths and Ags Kalvik. James and Ags proved far too strong for John and Roger, winning 6 and 5.
Last to play were Graham Harrison with Vernon Jones, against Byron Williams and Roger Matthews. This was a fairly close game, but Graham and Vernon proved just too strong, winning 3 and 2.
