In January of this year, Tenby Ladies Golf Team was looking like a strong contender for the Welsh Team Championships in Llangollen this year. There were five players with handicaps under seven, some of whom were Welsh international players or training in the Welsh squad.
Heather Morgan offered to captain the side and do all the organising for our lady captain Linda, and things were looking good. Hotel booked in the town of Llangollen, funds in place to help with the travel and hotel stay. It was still looking good.
However, what is it they say about the best laid plans? Last week, Tenby Ladies Team went to compete in their new uniforms, but now our lowest handicap was seven! Only five ladies were now available for the team, but valiant competitors every one of them.
Denise Edwards, Sue Griffiths, Heather Morgan, Linda Evans and Carol Beecher went into battle the first day with Royal St. David’s from Harlech. We knew they had won the competition before, and that all their handicaps were lower than ours. Our aim - to give them a run for their money. We lost that day 4-1, but had many compliments paid about our tenacity as a team.
As first day losers, we were then entered automatically into the Plate competition. Again the opposition, Llanwern, with three county players, had lower handicaps, but with nothing to lose we resolved to go out and do our best. Denise had a stunning win on the 19th hole, cheered on by our local team from Derllys Court. Sue and Heather managed to take their opponents to the 17th, before losing. Linda played her socks off and won 3 and 2, but Carol was overpowered by a much lower handicap on the 15th.
As team captain, I could not be more proud of the ladies’ spirit and commitment. I feel honoured to have been part of it, and to have put Tenby back on the competitors map for Wales.
