The composition of most of Tenby GC’s matchplay finals has now been decided.
Finals Day will take place on Sunday, September 24, and the competitors for the various knock-out trophies are as follows:
Scratch Cup: This is the club’s premier competition. In the semi-finals, Johnny Morris beat Andy Pouton and Richard Morton defeated Dave Morris.
The Scratch Cup is played over 36 holes. Johnny will be looking to extend his record number of victories to 11. Richard has made his second successive final.
Davies Cup: This is for men whose handicaps range between 10 and 17. Dai Cope beat Tony Key to reach the final. Jerry Whitehouse was fortunate in that Dave Hancock conceded his semi-final as he will be away on Finals Day.
Charles Mathias Cup: Known as the Junior Cup, this is for those with handicaps between 18 and 28. This year’s finalists are Barrie Frayne and Steve Watkins who defeated Peter Turton and John Ball, respectively.
Allen Cup: This competition is open to all the male members of Tenby GC and consequently it attracts the biggest entry. The finalists are often low handicappers.
However, in 2017, the Allen Cup will be contested by Chris Smith, who beat Chris Hughes, and Austin Davies, who got the better of his son, Mike.
Veterans Cup: This matchplay event is played off the yellow boxes and competitors have to be at least 60 years old. Austin Davies has also reached this final by defeating Ross James. He will face Dave Blackmore who beat John Stevenson.
President’s Cup: To reach the knock-out stages (16) players have to qualify via a medal round. Chris Thompson reached the final by beating Rob Willcox. At the time of going to press, Peter Brown and Jack Harries had not played their semi-final.
Sellar Cup: This is a similar format to the President’s Cup, i.e. strokeplay then matchplay. Neil Thomas, who beat Mike Davies, awaits the winner of Phil Rees and Lee Lewis.
Colwyn Williams Cup: This is Tenby GC’s fourball better ball competition. Tim Davies and Paul Davies beat father and son, Spencer and Jack Harries. They will face brothers Grant and Tom Watkins who defeated low handicappers, Dave Morris and Graham More.
Reason Jones Cup: This is the tough foursomes format, i.e. alternate shots. The aforementioned Davies’ also reached the semi-finals, but lost to Dai Cope and Martin Morris in extra-time. Conversely, the Harries’ beat Jeff Banfield and Idwal David to reach the final.
Finals Day is one of the best events in Tenby GC’s calendar. Everyone is welcome to watch the finals - both golfers and non-golfers. All the competitors would appreciate support on Sunday, September 24.
