Traditionally the Brooks Cup is played on the famous Tenby links on Easter Saturday. This year, the course was so full with visitors in the Dormies and a DGU match, that only seven fours could be accommodated (memo to self to be sure this doesn’t happen again!). Consequently, last year’s winners couldn’t get a slot to defend their title. Those people who took note when warned of this scenario earlier in the year did manage to sign up and play.
It was a lovely Spring day, if somewhat chilly due to the cold northerly wind, but some good scores were recorded.
Many found the greens testing, but twos were still recorded on the 12th by Gareth and Angela Davies, and on the 17th by Heather Morgan and Mervyn Tucker, and Trevayne Keohane and Allan Morton.
With the format being straight foursomes, both players took part in the two, so each person received a sleeve of balls.
A frequent comment as one walks back in from a so-so game of golf at Tenby is “well, there’s always the bag draw.” This enables a couple to win back their entry fee. The lucky pairs on this occasion were Chris and Carol Beecher, Heather Morgan and Mervyn Tucker, and Julie Tordoff and Mick Seal.
So to the winners: Three couples finished with a respectable 36 points, but taking third place on countback were Sue Griffiths and John Hancock. Anna Hubbard and her husband Keith took second place with 37 points. But the winning score of 39 points was by Chris and Carol Beecher, who unfortunately, due to family commitments, had left before presentation of the magnificent cup.
However, they did come in later in the week for the photo above, hence this late report.
Many thanks to Steve and Pam Cole who took over the running of the competition for me. Thanks also to Tom in the Pro Shop, to Emma and her gang doing food and drinks, and to all those who played -for keeping a tradition alive that goes back to 1949.
Please note there are notices on the Mixed Board at the back of the clubhouse about the mixed matches against Ashburnham, St. Pierre and the Ping Knock-out. Please read and respond!
