You may recall, dear reader, how in previous articles I blathered on about repeating last year’s double victory over Machynys Seniors - well there’s many a slip ‘twixt cup and lip - as was painfully demonstrated on Tuesday, April 19, when 18 players from Machynys came to Tenby and caused alarm and confusion!
It all started so nicely - captain Peter and his partner posed for a pre-match photograph with Machynys Seniors captain Laurence Lindsey and his partner on the first tee and everybody seemed so friendly, the sun was shining and the breeze was balmy - what could possibly go wrong?
Only after all 36 golfers had congregated in the clubhouse, partaken of a post-match anti-dehydration draught and enjoyed a very well received duck, pastry and vegetable creation by Lee did the awful truth begin to emerge.
First, the charity raffle prize distribution - five prizes in all, and Machynys won four of them! Perhaps this was a foretaste of things to come, because as the two captains made their address to the teams it was apparent that something was seriously wrong.
Captain Peter announced the result - but in Welsh! The five percent of the audience who actually understood him either cheered or groaned depending upon their allegiance. After captain Laurence translated for the remainder of us, the dreadful truth was out - Machynys 6.5 points, Tenby 2.5 points - Nightmare!
I can only say that we still have a chance to stop the rot when we play at Machynys on Thursday, May 5, but I have to stop writing now because I can scarcely see through the tears!
Who said “It’s only a game”?
