The pitch at Monkton was near perfect, which suited the holders’ passing style, and after 10 minutes, they started to settle into the game and got the ball on the ground and moving quickly.
It was the midfield pairing of Iori Humphreys and Charlie Phillips who got things going for Tenby. The duo started to stamp their authority in the middle of the park and they were assisted well by the ever-industrious Wil Malone.
The game plan from the off had been to get width and try to create one-on-one situations in wide areas. With wide men in Teejay and Archie Smith, this would cause most teams problems.
However, the opening goal came from the glossy trickery of Charlie Phillips, who got tripped in the box and up stepped Charlie Gregory to smash home the resulting penalty.
The game started to open up more after the first goal, which suited Tenby, and it wasn’t long before the second came, an excellent through ball from Charlie P put Archie through and he shot early with a sublime finish into the bottom right.
Tenby seemed comfortable at this point, with the back three of George Rossiter, Calum Karaka and Charlie G dealing well with Camrose’s direct pace and power.
On the few occasions they were beaten, ’keeper Rhys was on hand to clean up and quickly distribute to get Tenby on the attack again.
It was impressive to see how the boys have developed in their passing game, always looking to play through the thirds of the pitch and looking to get wide where possible. Ned Davies was neat and tidy on the right, with Archie getting continued success on the left. However, just before the break, Camrose capitalised on some sloppy defending, Sam Pritchard, with a good finish, making it 2-1 at the break.
The cup holders came out a different team in the second half. The nerves had settled and the front two of Kurt Sarrionandia and Teejay Gardner were now holding the ball up well to allow the midfield to link up and it was within minutes that Tenby regained a two-goal cushion. Great wide play from TJ allowed Archie to strike for his second of the game, which subsequently settled the whole team, allowing them to pass and keep the ball better.
Finnan Arthur settled into the game well and started to put some quality balls through and it was more clever link-up play from Kurt and TJ which provided Archie with his third, which he fully deserved, as he was outstanding on the night.
With a three-goal cushion, the management decided to park the bus and put the defensive quartet of Jake Allen, Rhys Richards, Matthew Bradley and Harry MacDonald on to see the game out; all four put in impeccable performances.
The pace of Sam up front for Camrose was always a threat and credit must be given to Charlie G who stuck to his task in dealing with Sam, yet on 70 minutes, a ball over the top allowed him to break free and give Camrose a lifeline.
Tenby didn’t falter, they stuck to the task and within minutes and more wide play Teejay struck to make it five and secure the game and ensure the cup was coming back to Tenby.
Tenby U14s (sponsored by Heatherton) beat a battling St. Clears 8-1 in their last game of the season to claim their third Pembrokeshire league title in a row.
The boys put the disappointment of their defeat in the cup semi-final behind them and finished the season strongly and in style, playing some lovely passing football and also scoring some spectacular goals along the way.
Striker Lewis Morgan opened the scoring with a lovely volley and went on to score three more well-worked goals, using his strength to good effect. Defender Dylan Hughes scored a beauty from well inside his own half with a shot that bounced over the unfortunate St. Clears ’keeper’s head and into the back of the net.
His brother, Rhys ‘safe hands’ Hughes, was as solid as ever between the sticks for Tenby and St. Clears only managed the one consolation goal.
Olly Morris, Tenby’s mercurial left winger, scored a hat-trick to add to his impressive goal tally for the season.
With the three points in the bag, the league was won.
They boys have played some great football over what has been a very long season, during which they also reached the quarter-finals of the West Wales District Cup.
Another well-deserved league title to add to the team’s list of achievements. Well done boys and well done to coaches Gavin Scotcher and Neil Proctor. All the parents really appreciate all the time and dedication Gav and Neil put into making this a successful and happy team.
