St. Florence girls football club had their first taste of football at the FAW Women’s and Girls festival in Aberystwyth recently. For most of the girls that travelled, it was their first experience of a football match. The club entered an Under 10s and an Under 12s team.

Under 10s

The Under 10s team for the day was Neve McDonald, Laura Davies, Ella Wainwright, Lanelle Brown, Ava Rowell and Ophelia Jenkins. The girls played against Cardiff Bluebelles, Caernarfon, Tregaron and Baglan.

With the girls playing each team twice, it gave them plenty of opportunity to be able to play in every position. They played really well and got better as a team every time they played. This will be brilliant experience for the girls in preparation for the coming season. They were delighted to be presented with a medal and t-shirt at the end of the day.

Under 12s

The Under 12s team of the day was Ella Thomas, Emily Roberts, Kacy Hughes, Mabli Evans, Alex Young, Imogen Scourfield and Maddie James. While this was the first time the girls had played as a team, they should be proud of the way they played. They not only showed individual skill, but also played as a team, with some brilliant passing taking them quickly from defence to attack, and they also scored some really good goals.

The girls also showed great character by twice coming from behind to level games they could easily have lost. With teams from all over Wales in their age group, they played 10 games in total. They finished the day with five wins, three draws and only two games lost.
