Whatever happens to Carew from now until the end of the season, the players can look back on it with fondness.
A great run in the West Wales cup has resulted in a semi-final against Giant’s Grave, while an even better run in the Senior Cup has resulted in an appearance in the final next month.
Who they will play remains to be seen, but if they turn up to the final like they did in the semi, their opponents (Monkton or Merlins Bridge) will be in a for a tough day.
Pennar were certainly up against it in this game, and although they acquitted themselves well, the Rooks were always on top.
They played the ground better, coped with the biting cold wind better, had taller players in defence to nullify any Pennar crosses into the box and had too much up front for the Pennar defence.
It certainly wasn’t plain sailing, but as they went into the break 1-0 up thanks to Sam Christopher’s close range goal and knowing they had the elements on their backs in the second half, there was only going to be one winner.
This was definitely the case after they scored a second minutes after the break with Shaun Whitfield nipping in to score.
The expected floodgates didn’t materialise. Pennar regrouped, tried their best, but their best just wasn’t good enough on the night.
They pulled one back as Connor Roberts curled one in from outside the box, but when Sean Ferney grabbed Carew’s third a good proportion of the crows started to make their way into the clubhouse knowing the result was a foregone conclusion.
Carew went into the game in great form having secured a fabulous away win at Goodwick, winning 3-2 after a Jordan Richards brace and a Lloyd Hughes strike, while Narberth had an excellent day of it at Herbrandston, winning 4-0 thanks to two goals apiece by Jordan Williams and Chris Brown.
Pennar won at Neyland, winning 2-1 after goals from Ben Adams and Josh Cary, while leaders Monkton had a tough day of it at Saundersfoot, just winning 3-2 after goals by Jake Seaton, Ben Steele and James Russell.
Saundersfoot’s goals came from Jack Franklin and Adam Davidson.
St. Clears’ home game against Hakin was postponed.
In division two, Hundleton just lost out at Fishguard 3-2 with Lawrenny going down 5-0 at St. Ishmaels.
A better day for Kilgetty, though, with a 5-0 win at Prendergast Villa.
Carew could be on for a hat-trick of cup final appearances if their seconds can follow the lead of the thirds and firsts and they have given themselves a fighting chance after a brilliant 7-1 win at home against Milford Athletic in the second round of the third division cup.
They had few alarms during the afternoon with Sam Christopher scoring four alongside goals from Haydn Shapcott, Carl Thomas and Gareth Lewis.
Pendine are through, too, after a 4-1 over Narberth seconds
In league action, goals from Nathan Evans and two from Sean Seymour-Davies were not enough to prevent St Clears going down 4-3 at Clarbeston Road seconds while Monkton had an easy day of it at St. Florence with the Swifts’ seconds winning 9-2.
Josh Sture led the way scoring three with Liam Butland adding a brace. The other goals were scored by Wayne Boswell, Corey Mair, Luke Hendry and Ryan Eynon.
The game between Pembroke Boro and Milford United seconds was postponed, while Pennar seconds beat Solva seconds 18-0.
Cosheston were without a fixture in division four after Herbrandson seconds failed to raise a side, with Pennar thirds beating Hundleton 2-0.
Dean Rossiter proved that age is no barrier to scoring goals in senior football as the veteran scored Kilgetty seconds’ only goal at home against Neyland seconds, while there were no games at all in division five.
