The Pembrokeshire football season gets going again this weekend after the Christmas and New Year break and teams will be hoping the weather relents enough for games to take place.
The 2015/16 season has been a stop-start affair due to the wet conditions, with some teams having played fewer than 10 games, while others have played as many as 15.
League fixture secretary Micky Phillips admits the end of the season will be a tight squeeze for some clubs as they seek to make up the shortfall of games played and suggested the season may have to sneak into May for it to complete.
“We don’t like going into May as that coincides with the cricket season, which not only causes concerns for player availability, but also for clubs that share grounds with cricket teams, such as Carew and Lawrenny for example.
“Usually in a season we have around 50 games cancelled due to the weather, but so far this year we’ve had over 150, so it’s been a bit of a headache trying to re-arrange matches and appease clubs.”
Phillips has spent time as fixture secretary for football and cricket and admits that cricket is easier to manage as the fixtures are set in stone, but football is more fluid.
“I could publish the entire fixtures for the season in football, but after the first month there would be changes, mainly due to cup competitions, with some teams doing well and others not so well. Then you have weather postponements to consider and once they kick-in, trying to re-arrange fixtures proves a real challenge.
“There are around 1,000 senior football matches a year in Pembrokeshire and we’ve already had around 15 per cent cancelled and we could very well have more if the rain continues or we get a cold snap, so clubs are going to have a busy end of season.
“As soon as the clocks go forward, we’ll make a start on midweek fixtures to try and get them completed.”
