Dan Cherry did what he did over 20 years ago, he scored 100 at Burton. Back then, it was the final of the Duggie Morris Cup against Pembroke as a 15-year-old, this time it was in a league fixture against the home side.
There’s no getting away from it, Cresselly’s batting is the strongest in the county. Even when Cherry can’t play due to work commitments with Glamorgan, it’s still the strongest around. With him in it, it’s even more so.
If most teams were tasked with chasing 240 to win, the challenge could be too much for them, not Cresselly however. They may have lost six wickets chasing the total but they still passed it with ease., Cherry scoring 103 not out and Ryan Lewis blasting a quickfire unbeaten 63.
Simon Cole, a brilliant player in his own right was rather overshadowed by it all despite scoring 40.
They are second in the league at the moment, 30 points behind leaders Neyland.
Saturday was a bittersweet day for Whitland. In the morning, they buried one of their own, Hilliard Davies, widely thought of as the gentleman of the local game who recently passed away, and in the afternoon, they defeated Haverfordwest and defeated them with ease.
They had Ben Harvey to thank for bowling Haverfordwest out for 146, while Steffan Jones took 3-30.
In reply, Matthew Davies’s 36 not out and Iestyn Scourfield’s unbeaten 34 coupled with Nathan Evans’s 23 saw them home for the loss of six wickets.
Lawrenny had an easy afternoon of it defeating Johnston by nine wickets after bowling the Tigers out for 47.
Rob Williams rolled back the years to take 5-26 and Jamie Lewis 4-19, while in reply Harry Thomas hit 24 not out.
Kilgetty meanwhile let a good position slip at home to Neyland.
At one stage, they were 82-2 before being skittled for 95, Dafydd Bevan’s 40 and Ross Hardy’s 45 the only highlight.
Neyland passed it for the loss of one wicket.
Tim Hicks was imperious for Carew on Saturday after his magnificent 118 helped the Rooks post 266-7 against Hook.
The hosts were also indebted to Rhys Davis’s 43 and Nic Scourfield’s 38.
In reply, Shaun Whitfield’s 4-26 and James Hinchcliffe’s 5-27 helped bowl the visitors out for 132.
Cresselly seconds’ fine start to the season continued with a nine wicket win over Pembroke who could only score 182-6, Phil Hay hitting 71 and Andrew Hay 54.
In reply, the home team raced to victory as Richard Harris scored 61 not out and Phil Williams 64. Matthew Webb was also in the runs hitting 53 not out.
Saundersfoot climbed a few places after a 51 run win at Llechryd. Saundersfoot hit 183-4 thanks to Sam Franklin’s 75 and Phil Jones’s 52, while in reply, Tom Mansbridge took 4-55 and Yannic Parker 3-6 as the hosts were all out for 132.
Victory for Narberth too after a six wicket win at home over Stackpole who batted first and scored 200-5 thanks to Josh Davies’s 85.
Narberth had few issues in the run chase with Aaron Keane hitting 59, Richie Adams 42, while Ben Quartermaine hit 41 not out after taking 3-46 earlier.
Defeat for bottom club Whitland seconds however after they were skittled for 98 at Haverfordwest seconds going on to lose by eight wickets. Dave Lee scored 46 for the Borderers.
In division three, Neyland seconds lost to Carew seconds who were made to work hard for the victory.
Neyland were all out for 143, but Carew lost eight wicket in reaching the total.
Haydn Shapcott held the innings together with an unbeaten 64.
Pembroke Dock returned to winning ways with a three wicket win over Haverfordwest thirds who were bowled out for 114 thanks to Nick Daley’s 4-47, while Rob Hearne and Billy Wood shared six wickets.
In reply, despite losing wickets at regular intervals, they prevailed thanks to Craig Butland’s 39 and Daniel Heeps’s 21.
Lamphey had a winning draw at home to Narberth seconds after posting 166-9 thanks to Peter McGilloway’s 55 and Gianluca Trimarco’s 39. Richard Howell and Nic Evans both took three wickets for the visitors.
In reply, Narberth were 65-0 until a flurry of wickets saw them shut up shop on 125-7.
Lawrenny seconds continue to impress after they accounted for Herbrandston who were all out for 59 in reply to Lawrenny’s 82 all out.
Adrian Harries scored 35 for Lawrenny, while Stuart Prosser took 4-26 for them in Herbie’s reply.
Saundersfoot seconds went down at home to Burton seconds after the hosts were all out for 120. Burton passed it for the loss of six wickets.
Paul Morris scored 62 for the hosts.
Jonathan Williams was in the runs for Hundleton again after his 101 not out helped his team gain a winning draw with Crymych.
Hundleton scored 214-2 while Crymych were 138-8 in reply.
Chris Stapleton and Steffan Williams both took three wickets for the visitors.
Meanwhile at Hook, the game between the hosts and Laugharne was an absolute cracker after Laugharne were all out for 123 and Hook passed it for the loss of nine wickets.
Shaun Lynch scored 29 for the visitors, while James Incleton took 3-18.
Meanwhile in division five, Cresselly seconds beat Neyland thirds by eight wickets after Neyland were all out for 57 thanks to Jamie Goldsworthy’s 4-7 and Megan Arthur’s brace, while in reply Billy Kinnear hit 24 not out and George Wilkins and unbeaten 32.
After last weekend’s memorable win, Pembroke Dock seconds came back to earth with a bump after a 162 run defeat at Haverfordwest fourths who batted first and scored 200-7.
The Dock were then bowled out for 38.
Finally, Stackpole seconds lost to Whitland thirds after the Lillies were all out for 62 with Whitland passing it for the loss of two wickets.
Tristan Rees took 5-3 for Whitland before scoring 28 not out, while Gwynne Phillips took 4-2.
