Wales recently bowed out of the ‘Over-50s World Cup’ after a defeat in the plate semi-final against South Africa.
The tournament was staged in Sydney, Australia, in late November early December, and the Welsh squad contained three Pembrokeshire cricketers - Neal Williams, Leighton O’Connor and Ian Poole.
Eight teams took part in what was the first Over-50s World Cup - Wales, England, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and Pakistan.
Wales had finished the group stage in sixth position after a good win against Canada. They had also kicked off their tournament with a memorable win against South Africa.
Their final group record was played 7, won 2, lost 4 and drawn 1. They finished above South Africa and Canada.
It was a respectable result bearing in mind that most of the other countries have a larger player pool to draw from and that over-50s cricket is very well established in other countries such as Australia who were the eventual winners.
