Young cricketers in Pembrokeshire are set to do battle in the inspiring setting of Pembroke Castle grounds on Tuesday (May 9).
Eight Pembrokeshire clubs will be fielding teams for an under-nine cricket festival – with the ethos of fun, enjoyment and participation.
The children will be representing the clubs of Cresselly, Haverfordwest, Hook, Kilgetty, Lawrenny, Neyland, Saundersfoot and Whitland.
The Festival is being organised by Sport Pembrokeshire in conjunction with Glamorgan County Cricket Club, and is supported by Valero.
“We would like to thank Jon Williams and Carys Mills of Pembroke Castle who have helped us to organise this event,” said Martin Jones, Cricket Development Officer for Sport Pembrokeshire.
The festival is anticipated to boost interest among young cricketers and their families in the forthcoming ICC (International Cricket Council) Champions Trophy matches taking place in Cardiff in June.
Glamorgan County Cricket Club will be hosting the games at The SSE SWALEC, which will feature England, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
“With the lure of five international cricket matches in Wales this June and the advent of the All Stars Cricket programme, this is an exciting year for cricket in Wales,” said Martin Jones.
The ICC Champions Trophy is a global tournament featuring the world’s top eight teams and will be played at Cardiff, Edgbaston and at The Oval.
Hugh Morris, Glamorgan CCC Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted to be welcoming the world’s best players to the Welsh capital for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.”
The fixtures in Cardiff are as follows:
June 6 - England v New Zealand
June 9 - New Zealand v Bangladesh
June 12 - Sri Lanka v Pakistan
June 14 - 1st semi final
