The annual Saundersfoot Bowling Club Open Week of competitions reached its climax last Saturday afternoon with the finals of the singles and pairs taking place.

In the main singles for the Osbourne Trophy, Lee Williamson, formerly of Tenby but now living in Cheltenham, was up against four times winner Phil Carpenter of Aberdare Harlequins.

In a match that saw top class bowling by both players, it was Lee, a winner of the Tenby Gold Cup on four occasions, who gained his first Saundersfoot success with a twenty one shots to eleven win.

The Poole Bowl Pairs saw Paul Diment of Tenby and partner David Kingdon of Kidwelly play father and son Steve and Iestyn Williams who play at Saundersfoot as well as Penygraig in the Rhondda Valley.

Scores were fairly even in the first half of the game but picking up counts of a six and a five in the middle period helped seal the win for Paul and David, by thirty three shots to nineteen.

In the Bowls Kingdom competition, Gareth Hughes, son of farmer Hughes and formerly of Saundersfoot, made an impressive return to the game after a gap of twelve years, defeating Mark Driscoll of Kidwelly by twenty one shots to fifteen.

At the presentation ceremony, competition organiser Paul Blayney firstly thanked the tournament sponsors Heritage Park of Pleasant Valley Stepaside, David Kingdon and Templeton Beer, Wine and Spirit Company for their invaluable sponsorship without which the event would not have been possible.

He also went on thank those competitors and supporters who had attended the six days of bowling and for the assistance that he had received particularly from Neil Hensman, Dave Kingdon and Neville Ruff.

The week’s markers were also thanked as well as Ken James for laying out the green each morning and Collette Bethwaite who had umpired the finals.

The wonderful ladies of the club earned special praise as well as the bar volunteers for ensuring that everyone was fed and watered all week.

Neil Hensman, Nev Ruff, Graham Hughes, Ken James and Dave Hicks were thanked for officiating the finals as well as those who had donated raffle prizes.

The trophies plus prize monies were then presented by Saundersfoot President Ann Lewis and Dave Kingdon.

Ann then , after giving her own thanks to everyone for their support, congratulated the finalists and Paul Blayney for his hard work throughout the week and Diane Rigden for organising the catering.

Paul and Diane were then presented with gifts as a token of appreciation from the club.

To round off proceedings, all present enjoyed a buffet that had been prepared by Ann Lewis and Kath Blayney.
