Ladies captain’s day
This year’s ladies club captain, Sue Roden, held her special day last week which was well attended by female members and her guests.
The theme was the 60s, with the range of fancy dress on display epitomising that era, causing everyone much laughter, particularly whilst they started proceedings with a spider, won by Christine Ball, and a fun game of bowls.
Now the object of bowling is to get as close to the jack as possible, but on this occasion, the bowls came first and then the jack was cast last!
Much hilarity ensued, with the winning triples being Jo Shewry, Val James and Jackie Ford.
Back in the clubhouse, two quizzes were held, with pictures of old television shows and ’60s songs to be identified, the winners being Sue Dooley partnering Kath Williams and Kath Blayney with Val James.
A guess the Santa’s name was won by Diane Disney, before everyone sat down to a splendid meal, with several male club members, namely Dai Davies, Brian Dooley, Ken James, Alan Rich, Paul Sneyd and Paul Blayney, serving the food and providing drinks and doing the washing up!
They didn’t feel so bad afterwards, however, when they each received a bottle of wine for their efforts!
Sue then presented the Captain’s Shield to Christine Harris for her support throughout the year as a St. Issell’s selector and for organising the Tuesday Triples each week, before thanking everyone for their attendance and friendship.
Club president Ann Lewis responded by thanking Sue for all her work and in providing such a lovely day.
A free raffle then took place and Sue announced that any monies raised on the day would be donated to Cancer Research.
Milford Haven 52
Saundersfoot 124
Saundersfoot completed their First Division league programme last Saturday with their best performance of the season, defeating Milford Haven away by 72 shots and gaining all 14 points.
On rink one, Graham Hughes led for Myrddin Dennis with Paul Sneyd at number two and Uncle Mackie third.
Taking an early seven-shot lead against the Dave Buchanan four, their lead was reduced to two after seven ends only to then win 12 of the 14 remaining ones to win handsomely by 29 shots to 11.
Brian Dooley, John Amos, Paul Blayney and skip Steve Dick produced a blistering performance on rink two against Raymond Lillycrop, Adam Beavis, Jim Thomas and Tony Ellyatt.
After just six ends they led by 15 shots to nil and eventually, with the aid of a six on the last, finished top rink with a 34 shots to 11win.
Rink three saw Don Poole, Roy Hooper, Brian Desmond and Joe Dennis win by 34 shots to 15 against Ernie Sturley, even though they dropped a count of seven along the way, for which they were fined!
Lastly, Billy Glynn, Dai Davies, Neil Hensman and captain Berwyn Dennis defeated Brian Cale on rink four by 27 shots to 15.
Following the match, Berwyn thanked those who had supported him and played throughout the season and Dai Davies and Graham Hughes as his fellow selectors.
Out of 16 matches played, Saundersfoot won 11, with just four defeats and one draw and have guaranteed a top three finish.
A reminder to all the male members of the club that the annual end of season bash will be taking place at the Chemist Inn on Friday, October 20, and a list with all the details can be found on the club notice board.
