ST THOMAS 67

SAUNDERSFOOT 108

The Saundersfoot First Division team returned to winning ways last Saturday with a convincing away victory over bottom of the table St. Thomas of Haverfordwest.

All 14 points were gained, with four rinks winning by an overall total of 41 points.

The villagers soon went in front and gained an early lead that they never looked like relinquishing although the home team, who were already relegated, put up a spirited performance.

Rink scores with Saundersfoot first and St. Thomas skips only were:

Dai Davies, Neil Hensman, Joe Dennis, Berwyn Dennis 33; Tony Wilks 12.

Brian Dooley, John Amos, Paul Blayney, Steve Dick 28; Mike Codd 26.

Don Poole, Richard Whittaker, Brian Desmond, Steve Poole 22; Phil John 15.

Graham Hughes, Paul Sneyd, Alan Brain, Myrddin Dennis 25; Neil Crawford 14.

Their last fixture of the season takes place tomorrow when the team travel to play Milford Haven.

SAUNDERSFOOT 92 BROOKEFIELD

ELECTRIC 64

Saundersfoot played a five-rink mixed friendly last week against a touring team from the Brookefield Electric club in Leicester.

The match, as usual, was played in a friendly spirit, with the visitors, although losing the match, determined to enjoy what was their last match of their week’s tour to the county and passing favourable comments about the village welcome and bowling green.

Rink scores with Saundersfoot first and Brookefield skips only were:

Billy Glynn, Pam Bowen, Mick Smith, Richard Whittaker 16; R. Hoult 11.

Dave Hicks, John Arman, Alwen Hughes, Paul Sneyd 22; M. Wade 14.

Dennis Reed, Angie Smith, Dennis Ball, Christine Harris 15; P. Anderson 16.

Val James, Ian Smith, Christine Ball, Brian Desmond 14; K. Toon 12.

Lynne Reyed, Roy Harris, Rod Bramhall, Sue Roden 25; L. Holmes 11.

There is one friendly remaining in the season and that takes place next Thursday against a touring team from Purley Bury.

ST. BRIDES 17

NEYLAND 21

The St. Brides Meyrick Owen team, consisting of Ian Smith, Dave Hicks, Peter Guyett and Rod Bramhall, suffered a rare defeat when they were defeated by Neyland in a home match by four shots.

The league title is still within their reach and they will be looking for a positive result in their last fixture which takes place next Tuesday at home to Tenby.

GARDEN PRESENTATION EVENING

This took place last Sunday at the club when the winners of the best garden plots on the green surrounds competition were revealed.

The idea to keep the areas tidy was first mooted by the then secretary, Sue Roden, two years ago who did a lot of preparatory work, splitting the surrounds into sections for members to maintain.

In order to provide a little rivalry, Brian Deeley donated a trophy to be presented annually and first place and the winners this year were Pam Bowen and Rod Bramhall, with Dennis and Christine Ball (winners last year) second and Kath and Paul Blayney third.

Members were pleased to see Brian, who has not been well this year, attending the event, as well as Madeline Brace who had judged the plots.

LADIES’ MEETING

There is a ladies’ meeting at the club on Friday, September 8, at 6 pm.

Please note that this is the last date for all monies to be paid for the West Wales Ladies Bowling Association AGM and dinner on Saturday, October 8, at the Nant-Y-Ffin Hotel.

CLUB COMPETITIONS

Would members please note that all tournament semi-finals must be completed by next Sunday in order for the club finals schedule to be completed for the following weekend.

COUNTY NEWS

Lady members of Saundersfoot recently joined with other West Wales Ladies Bowling Association members for their annual tour, led this year by county president Gwen Hale of Pendine.

Cardiff was the base, with the ladies playing three matches as well as enjoying the many delights of the capital city, both for shopping as well as hitting the bars after dark.

As an ex police lady, Gwen had requested PC Plod fancy dress and there was much hilarity by those on tour and unsuspecting members of the public, viewing the various costumes.

I have heard several stories of their escapades, but have been warned off repeating them with the view that and I quote “what occurs on tour, stays on tour”!

Their male counterparts, who I’m sure will probably be more restrained (perhaps!) will be jetting off to Weston Super Mare in a few weeks for their own tour.

WELSH LADIES FINALS WEEKEND

The final stages of this year’s Welsh Ladies Bowling Association competitions take place this weekend at the Brynhyfryd club, Neath, and there is plenty of representation from Pembrokeshire.

It’s semi-finals first tomorrow (Saturday) and Saundersfoot ladies Gemma Amos, Steph Amos, Julia King Thomas and Viv Edwards will be playing in the rinks event.

Sara John Davies from Haverfordwest will be kept busy as she is in four events, the under 18s and under 25s singles, the under 25s pairs and the triples together with Mandy Lewis and mum Gaynor.

Katie Thomas, of Whitland, is also in the under 25s semi-final and Ysie White, of Tenby, will be in the under 25s pairs.

Finally from Pendine, county president Gwen Hale will partner Beryl Lewis in the four-wood pairs.

Good luck to them all, with them hopefully progressing to the finals on Sunday.

ST. ISSELL’S FLOWER FESTIVAL

At this recent event, the bowling club provided their customary exhibit.

Normally, club president Ann Lewis is responsible for this, but as she was unable to do so this year, the responsibility fell to Sue Roden, who certainly maintained the high standard with a lovely display.

BRIAN DESMOND

Finally, the Gwent genius has been at it again. After giving him a good write up in the recent Observer and him buying 27 copies to distribute to his family and friends (must have a lot of family!), Brian would like another mention.

What for I do not know, but perhaps this will again increase the paper’s circulation!
