SAUNDERSFOOT 121 FAIROAK 108

The Saundersfoot members entertained day tourists from the Fairoak Club in Roath Park, Cardiff, last Sunday, and on an entertaining afternoon, thankfully sunny, won the match by thirteen shots.

Now, in the away friendly the previous week against Llantwit Major, the top village rink had been skipped by the Gwent genius Brian Desmond who was a little miffed (only joking) not to get a mention in my Observer report last Friday.

Bowlers can be so temperamental and so Brian decided to do it again in this game, hoping this time it would come to my attention!

Well it worked because top rink in this game was skipped by our Brian, but he can’t take all the credit as he was ably supported by his front three Paul Sneyd, Sue Dooley and Alwen Hughes!

All rink scores with Saundersfoot first and Fairoak skips only were:

Lynne Reyad, Pam Bowen, Billy Glynn, Neil Hensman 20 N. Roberts 18.

Alan Rich, Peter Guyett, Brian Dooley, Christine Harris 14 D. Wall 25.

Val James, Mike Carr, Rod Bramhall, Dai Davies 21 T. Wall 20.

Paul Sneyd, Sue Dooley, Alwen Hughes, Brian Desmond 36 Phil Wall 9.

Roy Harris, John Amos, Sandra Ingerson, Myrddin Dennis 13 D. Jones 19.

Joyce Howe, Graham Hughes, Sue Roden 17 D. Pickin 17 (triples).

There was another friendly due to be played last Monday against the Tenby Lions. but yet again the weather intervened and the match had to be cancelled.

MEN’S TEAMS

There is not much to report on the progress of the three men’s teams this week with not many matches taking place.

St. Issell’s played at Mariners, of Pembroke Dock, in a Second Division game and St. Bride’s hosted Fishguard and Goodwick in the Meyrick Owen league, but both teams unfortunately lost.

St Issell’s were due to play at home last Wednesday before completing their league programme with another home match on Sunday against Haverfordwest Castle.

The Meyrick Owen boys still have a chance of becoming champions if they can win their remaining matches, the first of which was due to be played yesterday at home to Whitland followed by another home match on Thursday August 24, against Neyland.

The Saundersfoot First Division team have three matches remaining, all away from home with the visit to Haverfordwest first up next Sunday followed by St. Thomas and Milford Haven on the following two Saturdays.

LADIES’ TEAMS

Both ladies teams played two home matches last week.

The Saundersfoot girls firstly lost to Whitland and then bounced back to defeat fellow club colleagues St. Issell’s. St. Issell’s also just lost out by three shots to Tenby ladies.

St. Issell’s ladies still top the league, but there are several teams close behind and their last league match, due to have been played last Monday, will have to be arranged due to the weather.

WEST WALES LADIES BOWLING ASSOCIATION COUNTY FINALS

These took place last weekend at Pendine, the home of ladies county president Gwen Hale.

Once again, the Saundersfoot ladies did themselves proud, winning five titles and supplying runners-up in three competitions.

Gemma Amos won the Under 25s singles before teaming up with mum Steph to take the two-wood title.

Steph herself made it three victories by also winning the two-wood singles and then with Ann Lewis and Viv Edwards being victorious in the triples.

To complete the club’s successes, Kath Blayney won the Autumn Cup singles title, defeating Saundersfoot ladies captain Sue Roden.

The matches were organised by county tournament secretary Julia King Thomas, umpired by Collette Bethwaite and everyone received the customary welcome from the host club who fed and watered both players and spectators over the two days.

The results were:

Singles: Katie Thomas (Whitland) defeated Sarah Mansbridge (Saundersfoot).

Autumn Cup: Kath Blayney defeated Sue Roden (both Saundersfoot).

Under 25 Singles: Gemma Amos (Saundersfoot) defeated Katie Thomas (Whitland).

Two-wood singles: Steph Amos (Saundersfoot) defeated Cally Jones (Whitland).

Two-wood pairs: Steph and Gemma Amos (Saundersfoot) defeated Cally Jones and Sue Evans (Whitland).

Four-wood pairs: Cally Jones and Kathy Jenner (Whitland) defeated Mary Codd and Win Howells (Haverfordwest).

Triples: Ann Lewis, Viv Edwards and Steph Amos (Saundersfoot) defeated Jenny Harris, Margaret Sanders and Trish (Neyland).

Rinks: Cally Jones, Kathy Jenner, Katie and Andrea Thomas (Whitland) defeated Di Disney, Marion Evans, Steph and Gemma Amos (Saundersfoot).

WELSH INTERNATIONALS

Finally, congratulations to Gemma and Steph for being successful in making the senior international squad for the 2018 British Isles championships which will be held at the Belmont Bowling Club in Belfast next June.

The trials took place last Sunday and ended quite a week for the mother and daughter.

More travelling again for dad John then!
