Saundersfoot played their first friendly of the season last week with a six-rink mixed midweek game at home to Briton Ferry.

The match was played in sunshine and with the green running well for this stage of the season, the villagers gained a narrow three-shot victory.

Following the game, both teams enjoyed a few hours of entertainment with the visitors in fine voice and Alwen Hughes reciprocating for Saundersfoot together with jokes from husband and club captain Graham and food provided by the club ladies.

WHITLAND 74 SAUNDERSFOOT 84

Last Saturday, the men played a friendly at Whitland on another fine and sunny afternoon. Both clubs intend to make this an annual fixture, with Saundersfoot playing hosts next season.

Following an enjoyable but competitive match, the Whitland club provided a welcoming roast pork carvery, complete with trimmings, ably cooked by Steve Morse.

Another men’s friendly took place on Sunday with Kidwelly the visitors having played Tenby the day before on their annual mini tour to Pembrokeshire.

ST. ISSELL’S LADIES

The St. Issell’s ladies team, captained by Sue Roden, started their league campaign last week with two wins.

Playing at home to Pembroke Dock Park, five of the six points being played for were gained, with one rink winning and the other drawing.

Lin Reyad, Sue Dooley, Chris Harris and skip Ann Lewis defeated Margaret Lewis by 27 shots to nine, whilst Kath Blayney, Audrey Williams, Christine Ball and Sue Roden drew 23 shots all with Barbara Rapley.

An away trip to Whitland the following day looked a tricky encounter, with the home team having won the league title for the past two years, but a spirited display saw the village girls win the match by nine shots.

Sandra Ingerson, Audrey Williams, Shirley Cox and Sue Roden defeated Cally Jones by 26 shots to 16, whilst Lyn Reyad, Christine Ball, Chris Harris and Ann Lewis went down by the narrowest of margins, just losing out to Andrea Thomas by 20 shots to 19.

St’ Issells ladies’ next match is on Saturday, May 6, when they travel to play Pendine.

Two games only in the next week, starting with Saundersfoot commencing their men’s league campaign at home to defending champions Tenby tomorrow (Saturday) at 2 pm, whilst on Sunday there is a six-rink mixed friendly at home to the Panther tourists.
