The annual Open Week at Pembroke Dock Bowling Club is always a very popular event for the whole of the county’s bowling community; this year’s event was no exception. Some of the county’s most talented bowlers gathered at the Memorial Park venue to contest the three trophies on offer.
Despite Monday’s ‘land-spout’ or ‘waterspout’ or tornado - or whatever (see the photographs), the weather was largely good with the occasional, hot or very hot, interval.
A splendid week of bowling was rounded off by an excellent Finals Day when Richard Jones (Pembroke Dock BC) and David John (Haverfordwest BC) contested the Alfred Phillips Bowl whilst Hugh Williams and Richard Jones (both Pembroke Dock BC) went head-to-head for the Sudbury Bowl.
The first 16 players to be eliminated from the two principal tournaments went on to contest the Texaco Shield. The finalists for this event were Paul Griffiths and Richard Morgan (both Pembroke Dock BC).
Eventual winner of Alfred Phillips Bowl was Richard Jones, but he couldn’t quite complete the double, as Hugh Williams pipped him to claim the Sudbury Bowl, while Paul Griffiths won the Texaco Shield.
