Tenby v Milford Haven
The Tenby team kicked off the new season last Saturday with a home league match against visiting Milford Haven.
The reigning champions were quickly into their stride and, although one rink was closely fought for much of the time, the remaining three romped away, with the Sharks eventually clinching a comfortable 14-0 victory to get the new campaign off to a good start.
They are ‘home’ again tomorrow (Saturday) when they play club rivals, the Five Arches, while after that, the Carruthers Shield group matches start in earnest, with Tenby having games against Fishguard and Goodwick, Whitland and Haverfordwest in their bid to again qualify for the knockout stages.
Tenby Arches Ladies v Whitland
On Sunday, Tenby Arches Ladies travelled to Whitland for their second game of the season, on a rather cold, overcast day.
The team on rink five consisted of Carol, Meryl, Jan and Jo. The game was very close, with neither team scoring more than two shots on any end. Tenby managed to gain a small lead of 9-5 by the halfway point, but Whitland pulled back and it was nine-all at the 13th end. Tenby won the next three ends, but they could not keep Whitland at bay and it was 13-all at the 19th end. Tenby won the 20th end and Whitland won the 21st, making the final score a respectable 14-all draw.
Over on rink six, Katie, Liz, Lynn and Alison also had a tight game. They were 7-3 down by the eighth end, but picked up a four on the ninth, bringing the score level at seven each. Tenby fell behind slightly until scoring another four on the 16th end, giving them a lead of one shot. They maintained this, winning four of the remaining five ends. The game ended 19-14 to Tenby, giving them an overall win after two hard-fought games.
Tenby Arches Ladies v Milford Haven
Tenby’s third game of the season was at home to Milford Haven on Monday. Unlike the previous day, the sun put in a very welcome appearance and the weather was bright, but breezy.
On rink five, Meryl, Liz, Jan and Jo dropped a four on the very first end, which was not the best of starts. They retaliated slightly, but were still down by 9-5 when they stopped for tea. Unfortunately, the refreshments did not help them and Milford Haven steadily increased their lead. The final score was a decisive win of 30-9 to Milford Haven.
On rink six, Tenby could field only three players, Lynn, Carol and Alison. They started well and were seven-nil up after four ends. Milford Haven then scored four on both the fifth and eighth ends, bringing the score level at nine-all. Milford Haven went into the lead for the first time on the 13th end, but Tenby settled into their rhythm, winning six out of the last eight ends. The score at 21 ends was Tenby 23 Milford Haven 17, so with the 25 per cent deduction, Tenby just scraped a win of 17.25 to 17.
Tenby Arches Ladies are sponsored by the Tenby House Hotel.
