The outdoor bowls season might be fast approaching, but there has still been plenty of action going on at Tenby’s Sutton Street green.

Last Saturday, it was club finals day, with the season’s various knockout tournaments reaching their climax.

At one stage, there was some doubt as to whether play would be possible as heavy overnight right, added to by a Saturday morning downpour, had left some parts of the green looking something more akin to a paddy field.

Fortunately, though, the deluge ceased, the clouds drifted away and, amazingly, play was able to start on time, with not a wetsuit in sight.

As the weather improved, so did the green, and it soon became the scene of some high class bowling and some nail-biting encounters.

None more so than in the final ‘final’ of the day, the WF Jones triples, which needed a sudden death extra end to eventually decide it.

After the designated 21 ends, the Five Arches trio of Viv John, Dai Spencer and Ashley Hooper were locked at 15-all with their Tenby counterparts, Evan and Peter Day and Andrew Muskett.

But cometh the hour, cometh the man, and it was skip Ashley who held his nerve to draw shot with his final wood and clinch the trophy.

Another epic encounter was witnessed in the mixed pairs final for the Marquiss Rose Bowl. Again fortunes fluctuated throughout, with the pairs of Peter Hooper and Liz Rees and new members Tony and Gill Rose tied at 19-all going into the final end.

Initially, it was the former who held sway with what appeared to be a match-winning wood, until Tony dashed their hopes as he made good use of the surrounding bowls to turn the head, take shot and claim victory.

Perhaps man of the day, though, was Cameron White. He appeared in no fewer than three finals and showed his ‘international’ class to win the lot, bagging two singles trophies and helping young Evan Day to celebrate a memorable first season of bowls by also winning the Berry and Rogers four-wood pairs.

Two other players also walked away with more than one piece of silverware under their belts, club chairman Dai Spencer adding the TP Hughes Club Championship Cup to his triples trophy and John Rees winning the Wyn Samuels over 65s singles and partnering Dave Lloyd to success in the Thomas Lloyd Jones over 65 pairs.

Full results from the day were as follows:

Maurice Ormond two-wood singles: Cameron White 21; Andrew Muskett 11.

Tenby Arches Ladies

v Milford Haven

Last Tuesday, Tenby Arches Ladies welcomed Milford Haven to the Sutton Street green for their last game of the year.

On rink four, Milford Haven took control of the first half and gained a 13-3 lead by the halfway point. The Tenby team of Margaret, Carol, Jo and Gill then pulled back and picked up a three on the 11th end, followed by a four on the 12th, making it a respectable 13-10. The game was very close after that and Tenby had gained a narrow lead of 16-14 as they went into the last end. Milford Haven then scored two, making the final score an honourable draw of 16-all.

Over on rink five, Liz, Meryl, Jan and Gerry started well and were ahead by six shots to one after four ends. Milford Haven then picked up a four, followed by a one, bringing the score to six-all. Tenby started to flag and won only three of the last 12 ends, as Milford Haven settled into their game. After the promising start, the final score was Tenby 10 Milford Haven 27, so just one point to Tenby.

Tenby Arches Ladies would like to thank Tenby House Hotel for their valued sponsorship throughout the year, and to the teams we have played who have given us such good competition. We look forward to seeing you all next year.
